Job Overview

As one of the oldest medical schools in the country, the UC College of Medicine has a reputation for training best-in-class health care professionals and developing cutting-edge procedures and research that improves the health and clinical care of patients.
The College of Medicine, Department of Surgery Section of General Surgery Weight Loss is looking for an Advanced Practice Provider to provide outpatient and/or inpatient care. This position will provide comprehensive, continuous, and personalized patient care, including diagnosis, treatments and consultations to facilitate the delivery of care in both inpatient and outpatient situations performing independently or as part of a treatment team including a range of professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, other mid-level providers, and social workers.


Essential Functions
  • Perform patient evaluations (Initial Assessment) for pre-surgical patients specific to Bariatric surgery.
  • Provide supervised health visits with pre-surgical patients meeting specific insurance requirements.
  • Counsel patients about a healthy lifestyle and nutrition as well as pre-surgical discussions
  • Prescribe appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities. Prescribe/administer medications for bariatric surgical patients as directed by physician and surgical team.
  • Lead and participate in case conference reviews for bariatric surgery patients. 
  • Evaluation of each patient and presentation to bariatric team including behavioral health, surgeon, and dietitians prior to their surgery date. 
  • Order and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic tests.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of interventions.
  • Maintain accurate medical records.
  • Participate in peer reviews as needed for insurance coverage.
  • Complete clinical phone calls for patient follow-up and consults.
  • Participate in research activities.
  • Educate patients and families about medical conditions and treatment plans. Facilitate staff, patient, and family decision making using evidence-based practice. 
  • Participate in research and development projects.
  • Participate in education of nurse practitioners, nurse practitioner students and medical students. Perform related duties based on departmental need. This job description can be changed at any time.

Required Education

Nurse Practitioner

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing and graduation from an ANA approved Nurse Practitioner Program.

 

Physician Assistant

  • Professional Degree
  • Graduation from a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessor agencies.

Required Trainings/Certifications

Nurse Practitioner

  • Current/valid RN and APN license/license eligible to practice in the state of Ohio. May require certification in corresponding specialty.

 

Physician Assistant

  • Certification as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Must be licensed/license eligible in the State of Ohio with prescriptive authority.
     

Required Experience

Nurse Practitioner

  • Three (3) years nursing experience.
  • Additional related work experience may be required depending on specialty/sub-specialty.

 

Physician Assistant

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience is required.
  • Additional related work experience may be required depending on specialty/sub-specialty.
