Job Overview

As one of the oldest medical schools in the country, the UC College of Medicine has a reputation for training best-in-class health care professionals and developing cutting-edge procedures and research that improves the health and clinical care of patients. The Department of Surgery is looking for an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to assist in providing comprehensive, continuous, and personalized care to patients of the Section of General Surgery, Division of Trauma and Critical Care. This position is assigned to the acute care hospital setting at a level one or level three trauma center. This position will support the University’s mission and commitment to excellence and diversity in our students, faculty, staff and all our activities.

Primary responsibilities will be to collaborate with interdisciplinary health care team caring for trauma, emergency general surgery, and critically ill patients, managing both their acute and chronic health care needs. The APP will demonstrate an advanced level of medical and nursing knowledge, with the ability to evaluate, diagnose, and provide treatment for the complex trauma, emergency general surgery, and critical care patients from admission to discharge. 
 


Essential Functions

Nurse Practitioner:

  • Perform appropriate history and physical for complex, acute, critical, and chronically ill patients. 
  • Order and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic tests. 
  • Prescribe appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of interventions. 
  • Maintain accurate medical records.  
  • Collaborate with other providers and members of the health care team in delivery of care and make appropriate referrals when needed. 
  • Educate patients and families about medical conditions and treatment plans. 
  • Facilitate staff, patient, and family decision making using evidence-based practice 
  • Participate in research and development projects. 
  • Participate in education of nurse practitioners, nurse practitioner students and medical students.

Physician Assistant:

  • Perform history and physical examinations in the inpatient and outpatient setting; write progress notes and narrative discharge summaries
  • Order laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patient
  • Prescribe necessary treatment and services for quality patient care.
  • Prescribe appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities.
  • Maintain accurate medical records.
  • Provide therapeutic procedures such as cast application and removal, wound suturing and dressing changes; monitor progress of patients, and report progress to supervising physician
  • Participate in basic science and clinical research projects conducted by supervising physician; prepare statistical reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
  • Participate in teaching medical students and physician assistant students in techniques and procedures which are unique to specific clinical setting.

Required Education

Nurse Practitioner:
A Master's degree in Nursing and graduation from an ANA approved Nurse Practitioner Program. Three (3) years nursing experience. 

 

Physician Assistant:
Graduation from a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessor agencies. 

 


Required Trainings/Certifications

Nurse Practitioner:  
Current/valid RN license to practice in the State of Ohio. BLS, ACLS, required.  If training was not as an ACNP, the applicant must be willing to pursue this as a condition of employment.  

 

Physician Assistant:
Certification as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.  BLS, ACLS, required.  Must be licensed/license eligible in the State of Ohio with prescriptive authority.

 


Required Experience

Nurse Practitioner:
Three (3) years of nursing experience in a critical care setting.

 

Physician Assistant:
A minimum of one (1) year of experience.


Additional Qualifications Considered

Nurse Practitioner:  
Four (4) years of nursing experience in a critical care setting.  ATLS ideal or be obtained within six (6) months of hire. The APP must demonstrate clinical and technical competence, sound clinical judgement, professionalism, and compliant documentation in a timely manner. The APP must be available to work some weekends.


Physician Assistant:  
ATLS ideal or be obtained within 6 months of hire. The APP must demonstrate clinical and technical competence, sound clinical judgement, professionalism, and compliant documentation in a timely manner. The APP must be available to work some weekends.
