The College of Medicine, Department of Surgery, and Division of Colon and Rectal, is recruiting for a full-time (100% FTE) Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant. This position will support the University’s mission and commitment to excellence and diversity in our students, faculty, staff and all our activities.

 

Under general supervision from an attending MD, assist in providing comprehensive, continuous, and personalized care to Colon and Rectal surgery patients in the outpatient setting. Our faculty and current experienced advanced level provider will be available to teach and support the new candidate to take on clinical responsibilities as needed. 
 


Essential Functions

Nurse Practitioner:

  • Conduct comprehensive or episodic health history and physical assessment of patients with Colon and Rectal disorders 
  • Conduct basic physical and psychosocial assessment of the individual and/or family. Assist physicians and other providers in delivery of care
  • Discriminate between normal conditions and normal and abnormal deviations by specific screening and tests. Refer patients with abnormal findings to physicians
  • Evaluate and manage postoperative patients
  • Assist with pre-operative preparation for patients. This includes procedure counseling, obtaining patients’ surgical consent in the office and submit the pre-operative orders
  • Manage common episodic and chronic illnesses and administer medication and treatments as prescribed. Obtain treatment consents as needed
  • Provide counseling and health training
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Participate in research and development projects
  • Order supplies as necessary; stock and maintain rooms
  • Perform related duties based on departmental need

 

Physician Assistant:

  • Conduct comprehensive or episodic health history and physical assessment of patients with Colon and Rectal disorders 
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to assist physician in diagnosing medical and surgical problems and prescribing necessary treatment and services for quality patient care; record the normal and abnormal data for review by the physician
  • Take patient histories, conduct physical examinations, and record the data in the patient's record; write progress notes and narrative discharge summaries; prepare patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings. Order and schedule laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patient
  • Carry out therapeutic procedures; monitor progress of patients, report progress to supervising physician, and maintain record of each patient's progress. Participate in basic science and clinical research projects conducted by supervising physician; prepare statistical reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions
  • May make work assignments for assigned nursing and technical personnel; review the work of lower rated employees; train new personnel
  • Participate in teaching medical students and physician assistant students in techniques and procedures which are unique to specific clinical setting. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

Nurse Practitioner:  

  • A Master's degree in Nursing from an ANA approved Nurse Practitioner Program 
  • Current/valid APRN license to practice in the state of Ohio
  • A minimum of one-year APRN experience

 

Physician Assistant:  

  • Graduation from a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessor agencies
  • Certification as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants
  • Current/valid PA license to practice in the state of Ohio
  • A minimum of one-year PA experience
