Job Summary

The APP Manager is the operational clinical leader for the four General Internal Medicine practices.  The purpose of the APP Manager is to provide clinical leadership in the development and implementation of ongoing quality improvement projects, developing and implementing policies and programs, ensuring compliance with UCSF policies and regulatory requirements, overseeing NP team schedule and productivity, training and technical assistance for clinical program, data and information sharing, and partnerships and collaborations. The APP Managers is a key leader in the implementation of lean process improvements across the practices. 

The APP manager will provide direct management of the General Internal Medicine APP team and collaborate with faculty physicians on the provision of high quality care. The primary managerial responsibility is to provide operational leadership and professional support to the APPs so there is alignment with the department and UCSF Health and oversight of all nursing practice, with the assistance of the Nursing Supervisor.  The primary clinical responsibility is to provide clinical services to outpatient adult patients.

The APP manager is part of the DGIM Leadership Team and works in very close collaboration with their Leadership peer group which includes 14 other managers/leaders, including physician leaders.  Each Management Leader has a Physician Dyad partner with whom they partner on strategic and operational oversight. 

The APP manager will be a practicing clinician and administrator. The incumbent in this position will be 5-10% clinical 90-95% administrative with the flexibility to limit their clinical practice based on administrative demands. A central responsibility of this role is to serve as a single point of contact, liaison, and expert for matters specific to APPs practice.

This position works predominantly onsite, with some limited remote work.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree required in a health care related field from an accredited program.
  • Minimum one (1) year progressive responsibility related healthcare leadership experience.   
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise a team and to manage the complex workflow and competing priorities involved with providing quality care as an Advanced Practitioner.    
  • In depth knowledge of patient care clinical standards, systems, external regulations and internal policies.  
  •  Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration and problem solving with all levels of management and staff. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to train and mentor subordinates, convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner, and to prepare and present a variety of reports, documentation, analyses, and project proposals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of progressive responsibility related to healthcare leadership.
  • Doctorate prepared.
  • Advanced experience in clinical specialty supervising Advanced Practice Providers.
  • Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document staff issues and performance, and to participate in decision-making on human resources matters.    
  • Demonstrated leadership skills to effectively supervise clinicians, manage complex workflow and multiple priorities.    
  • Working knowledge of human resources management practices and policies.    
  • Demonstrated ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document APP performance.    
  • Knowledge of business software, specialized applications and data management systems used in clinics / clinical departments.    
  • Demonstrated leadership and professional growth by achieving promotion to NP 3 classification.   
  • Experience supervising clinical positions.

License/Certification

  • Must hold a current and active RN and NP and Furnishing license in California.
  • National board certification in area of clinical practice upon hire - FNP-C or FNP-BC
  • Must have completed a BRN recognized graduate master’s degree program as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Must obtain an active and/or transferable DEA license to California and provide evidence by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer).
  • National Provider Identification.
  • Current American Heart Association CPR Certification.
  • Current American Heart Association ACLS Certification.
