Organizational Unit Overview
The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with ECU Health Medical Center, which serves as the principle teaching hospital as well as its flagship hospital for ECU. We treat more than 120,000 patients per year in a state-of-the-art ED at ECU Health Medical Center. ECU Health is a 960+ bed level 1 trauma center and regional stroke center.
In the Department of Emergency Medicine, our mission is to provide and continue to improve the quality of health care services whenever and wherever the patient needs them; to promote scholarly activity regarding emergency health care through education and research; and to maximize the accumulation and utilization of resources in order to accomplish service and scholarly activities, and promote the wellness and satisfaction of department members.
Our tertiary care catchment area includes more than 1.5 million people in eastern North Carolina, many of whom arrive via our integrated mobile critical care and air medical service. Our children’s ED opened in July 2012 and the children’s hospital opened in June 2013. In September of 2016, we extended our coverage to begin providing professional medical services at The Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head, North Carolina.
Job Duties
This advanced level practice provider is used to extend the services of the physicians and includes medical diagnoses and medical and surgical treatment as directed by the physicians at ECU Health Emergency Department and/or ECU Health Beaufort Hospital Emergency Department. This individual will be expected to help coordinate medical activities including activities of patient evaluation and care, as well as consulting physicians, technical, and other medical personnel as directed by the physicians. Nurse Practitioners applying will be expected to be trained to see patients of all ages. This individual will be expected to work some evenings, weekends and holidays.

Minimum Education/Experience
Graduation from a physician assistant program approved by the N.C. Board of Medical Examiners and “approved to practice medical acts” based on education and experience by the Board of Medical Examiners and two years of experience in the specialty area of assignment; or licensed as a registered nurse by the Board of Nursing and graduation from a nurse practitioner program approved by the N.C. Joint Subcommittee, and two years of experience in the specialty area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
License or Certification required by statute or regulation
Approved to practice medical acts based on education and experience by the NC Board of Medical Examiner OR Licensed by the NC Board of Nursing
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Urgent care or emergency department experience.
License or Certification required by the Department
