Responsibilities*

The Orthopaedic Surgery - Hip and Knee Replacement service is seeking a physician assistant/nurse practitioner to provide and advance the care of our patients through dedicated, professional service as an integral member of a comprehensive team. Job responsibilities include:

  • Assisting surgeons in the diagnosis and treatment of Orthopaedic Hip and Knee Replacement patients
  • Providing service continuity in the outpatient clinical setting (including preoperative and postoperative care, as well as management of non-operative patient conditions)
  • Performing detailed medical history; performing physical examination and presenting pertinent data to the medical staff; 
  • Collecting and assisting in the interpretation of reports from diagnostic imaging studies and laboratory tests; 
  • Evaluation and treatment of patients autonomously with faculty support as needed; 
  • Performing various minor office-based procedures, including application of braces, splints, casts and injections/aspirations; 
  • Assisting surgeons in the operating room as needed; 
  • Serving as a resource to administrative (administrative assistants and call center staff) and medical (nursing, medical assistants) staff on a daily basis and in instances of faculty absences; 
  • Coordination of care plans as needed; collaborate with other health care providers/clinicians to coordinate clinical care.
  • Providing follow-up to patients and assistance in the referral to various internal and external facilities; 
  • Participation in quality improvement activities;
  • Provide routine Orthopaedic services effectively and efficiently 

Required Qualifications*

Required Qualifications NP:

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification to practice as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Family Nurse Practitioner.
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
  • Current DEA required
  • AHA Approved BLS

Required Qualifications PA: 

  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.  
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA). 
  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required
  • Current DEA Required.
  • AHA Approved BLS

Desired Qualifications*
  • Experience with surgical patient care 
  • One (1) year of Orthopaedic Surgery experience as a PA/NP, Hip and Knee Replacement PA/NP experience is preferred. 
  • Demonstrated experience in evaluation and care of preoperative and postoperative surgical patients.  
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and patient service skills.   
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, problem solve, and delegate effectively and efficiently.  
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a collaborative team member on the Orthopaedic Hip and Knee Replacement and with other Orthopaedic Surgery advanced practice professionals.  
  • Demonstrated superior attention to detail and organizational commitment.
  • Demonstrated leadership in a professional healthcare setting and other professional activities. 
  • Demonstrated active participation in professional development activities.

Work Schedule

Hours/week: 5 Days/week 40 hours, no weekends, or on-call requirements

Shift/Hours/Days:  Monday-Friday, no weekends, or on-call requirements
Position is based at Michigan Medicine Orthopaedic Surgery Clinic locations. Primary clinic responsibilities. Some OR may be required. Clinic Locations: Brighton Center for Specialty Care, Domino?s Farms, Northville Heath Center, Taubman Heath Center, West Ann Arbor Health Center and/or UH OR


Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Physician Assistants of Michigan Medicine, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
