Responsibilities*

Assist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons with peri-operative care of surgical patients on the inpatient unit (4B) as well as a significant component as a first or second assistant in the operating room and perioperative care of patients in the outpatient clinic.

  • Assist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons with peri-operative care of surgical patients on the inpatient unit (4B)
  • Serve as a first or second assistant in the operating room for surgical procedures.
  • Provide perioperative care for patients in the outpatient clinic.
  • Work collaboratively with attendings, fellows, residents, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, nutritionists, social workers, discharge coordinators, and other consulting services.
  • Ensure high-quality inpatient and outpatient care for all oral and maxillofacial surgery patients.
  • Offer education and orientation for preoperative patients seen in clinic and inpatient settings.
  • Supervise postoperative patients in a clinic setting.
  • Manage patients' co-morbidities effectively.
  • Act as the first contact for triaging inpatient consults.
  • Facilitate hospital-to-hospital transfers.
  • Provide peri-operative virtual surgical planning services and custom implants.
  • Support the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery team by participating in daily resident-led rounds.
  • Assess patients and adjust care orders as directed under protocol.
  • Participate in daily multidisciplinary discharge rounds.
  • Facilitate safe discharge and transition of care for oral and maxillofacial surgery patients.
  • Communicate with patients' primary care physicians regarding follow-up medical plans.
  • Participate in preoperative care conferences to anticipate medical needs during hospitalization.
  • Act as a first or second assistant in minor and major surgical procedures.
  • Provide patient and family/caregiver education.
  • Document care and patient progress through detailed records.
  • Communicate daily with nurse coordinators to ensure smooth transitions between inpatient and outpatient care.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process.


Required Qualifications*

NP:

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan
  • Current specialty certification to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Michigan 
  • Current specialty certification to practice as a Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) 
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License required
  • ACLS required (separate AHA approved BLS also required unless ACLS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center).
  • Current DEA registration


PA:

  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • ACLS required (separate AHA approved BLS also required unless ACLS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center). 
  • Current DEA registration required.
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required

Desired Qualifications*
  • Minimum of two (2) years of full-time practice experience as an Advanced Practice Provider 
  • At least one (1) year Advanced Practice Provider experience with inpatient head and neck surgical patients
  • Demonstrated participation in Quality Improvement (QI) projects and/or research 
  • Documentation of experience presenting to groups
  • Ability to positively contribute to a group or inpatient setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, organization, and problem-solving abilities
  • Capability to work independently while prioritizing teamwork.
  • Ability to coordinate clinical care and advocate for patients assertively.
  • High level of critical thinking skills 
  • Proficiency in prioritizing assignments and managing a busy work environment.
  • Competence in managing patients' co-morbidities.
  • Clinical leadership experience with complex and multifaceted projects
  • Motivation to learn and engage in activities to enhance patient care.
  • Proficiency in providing patient education, evidenced by previous educator roles or training.
  • Professional appearance, demeanor, and outstanding customer service skills

Work Schedule

40 hours per week

Shift/Hours/Days: Day Shift, Monday - Friday. Must have some flexibility in work schedule to include inpatient rounding and OR coverage.

Location:  Inpatient Adult Hospital and Operating Room, potential for clinic in Med Inn


Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
