About the Department
 

The Comer Pediatric Primary Care Clinic is located in the University of Chicago’s Comer Children’s Hospital. The practice provides comprehensive primary care with general pediatric care services that include well-baby and well-childcare, immunizations, school physicals, nutrition counseling, care for acute illnesses such as flu, injury prevention and counseling, health screening and disease prevention. In addition, our child health experts can work with families on important medical and social issues such as: behavioral issues, problems at school, family, and parenting problems.


Job Summary
 

Work as a member of the Comer Pediatric Primary Care Clinic team and through a collaborative practice agreement, provide specialized clinical assessment, evaluation, tests, treatments, therapies, medical management, and other direct care to general pediatric patients.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care and formulate plan of care in collaboration with family, physician, nursing staff and other members of the health care team. 

  • Communicates management and follow-up plan to family and patient. 

  • Obtains medical history and perform physical assessment. Physical assessment may include vaginal or pelvic exam. 

  • Orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic studies. 

  • Prescribes appropriate medications as set forth in the delegation of prescriptive authority. 

  • Screens patients, as appropriate, to practice preventive medicine. Monitor chronic diseases. Assess patients to determine the need for hospital admission. Make referrals to subspecialties and other disciplines as indicated. 

  • Provides health maintenance care and education. Promote positive health behaviors. Assure that appropriate systems and resources are in place to maintain established standards of care. 

  • Participates in answering the Pediatric Primary Care Clinic phone line for routine and urgent clinical needs of patients. 

  • QI/Staff Education: Participate in teaching trainees, including RNs, LPNs, MAs, and nurse practitioner students. Participate in the development, review and evaluation of policies and procedures. Participate in developing and implementing QI monitoring for the Pediatric Primary Care Clinic with clinic leadership, medical, nursing, and administrative staff. 

  • Analyzes test data or images to inform diagnosis or treatment. 

  • Has a solid understanding about drug regimens and possible side effects or interactions with other substances such as food supplements, over the counter (OTC) medications, or herbal remedies. 

  • Participates in counseling patients about prescribed therapeutic regimens, normal growth and development, family planning, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance. Interprets patient's condition quickly and concisely and determine the best course of treatment. This can include ordering appropriate laboratory or imaging studies, discussing patient with the Emergency Physician and/or referring patient to consultants. 

  • Performs other related work as needed. 


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and training in a related job discipline.

Certifications:

Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois

Preferred Qualifications  


 


Education: 


  • Advanced degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program. 


 


Experience: 


  • 1-3 years clinical experience as a pediatric nurse practitioner.  


 


Licenses and Certifications: 


  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date. 

  • Once licensed, apply for a mid-level practitioner-controlled license and DEA number.

  • Demonstrated clinical competency. 

  • Ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments. 

  • Work effectively under pressure. 

  • Use independent judgment. 

  • Strong communication skills. 

  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate communication among various levels of practitioners.
