About the Department
 

Faculty in the section of Pediatric Critical Care cover the 30-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit housed within the Comer Children's Hospital. They provide care to medical and surgical pediatric patients requiring intensive care and supported by advanced technologies. Section faculty members also cover the Pediatric Sedation, Pediatric Burn Unit and Pediatric Palliative Care services. They are actively involved in research to improve the care of critically ill children. Additionally, the section maintains a fully accredited fellowship program designed to prepare young physicians for an independent career in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.


Job Summary
 

Work as a member of the Comer Palliative Care/Comfort Care team and through a collaborative practice agreement, provide specialized clinical assessment, evaluation, tests, treatments, therapies, medical management, emotional support, and other direct care to pediatric patients referred to the Comer Palliative Care/Comfort Care Service.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care and formulate plan of care in collaboration with physician, nursing staff, and the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the Credentials Committee.  

  • Obtain medical history and perform physical assessment. 

  • Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic studies.  

  • Prescribe appropriate medications as set forth in the delegation of prescriptive authority.  

  • Make referrals to subspecialties and other disciplines as indicated.  

  • Communicate management and follow-up plan to family and patient. 

  • Provide emotional support to patient and family.  

  • Identify educational needs of family members and assist with. teaching as appropriate. 

  • Provide health maintenance care and education.  

  • Assure that appropriate systems and resources are in place to maintain established standards of care.  

  • Participate in housestaff and nursing teaching.  

  • Participate in the development, review, and evaluation of policies and procedures. 

  • Participate in developing and implementing QI monitoring for the Pediatric Palliative Care/Comfort Care service.  

  • Demonstrate in-depth understanding of current professional and legal trends, concepts and issues related to practice. 

  • Ensure that appropriate systems and resources are in place to maintain established standards of care. 

  • Participate in self and peer evaluation to improve quality of care.

  • Act as a resource for clinical skills for staff on or off the unit. 

  • May participate in clinical research projects conducted by supervising physicians. 

  • Evaluates goals and outcomes considering the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family, and the organization. 

  • Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient’s plan of care. 

  • Has a deep understanding and response to adverse drug reactions, with special attention to vulnerable populations such as infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, or older adults. Develops and coordinates APP training and professional development activities. 

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.

Certifications:

Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois

Preferred Qualifications  


 


Education: 


  • Advanced nursing degree from an accredited school/college of nursing. 

  • Completion of approved NP training. 


 


Experience: 


  • Clinical experience as a pediatric nurse practitioner. 

  • Palliative Care experience. 


 


Licenses and Certifications: 


  • Certification as a pediatric nurse practitioner.  

  • Ability to obtain Illinois advanced practice nurse license by start date.  

  • Current license as Registered Nurse.  

  • Certification from the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses.

  • Demonstrated clinical competency.  

  • Ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments.      

  • Advanced knowledge in pain and symptom management.  

  • Being detail-oriented. 

  • Be able to work effectively under pressure.

  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate communication among various levels of practitioner. 

  • Ability to interview and obtain medical information.  

  • Willingness to enter into a written collaborative agreement with collaboration physician upon hire.  

  • Be facile in both inpatient and outpatient settings.  

  • Be able to properly document and bill for consultative services and clinic visits.
