Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Advanced Practice Nurse for NJMS-Psychiatry. The advanced practice nurse joins a collaborative, multidisciplinary team at the Comprehensive Addiction Resources & Education (CARE) Center, part of the state-designated Northern New Jersey Medication-Assisted Treatment Center of Excellence. This position works closely with a team of outreach, clinical, housing, and law enforcement partners to provide services to homeless residents in the community, as part of a new mobile outreach initiative, based in the City of Newark. The primary job responsibility is direct patient care, which consists of providing psychiatric and substance use treatment.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Performs in an expanded nursing role and has responsibility for meeting the psychiatric and substance use needs of patients.
  • Conducts comprehensive assessments and exams and produces complete and timely documentation in the electronic medical record. Prescribes medications when clinically indicated.
  • Maintains a friendly, warm and compassionate attitude toward patients. Employs a harm reduction philosophy for substance-using patients and contributes to an atmosphere of empathy and respect for all patients.
  • Administers depot injections as clinically indicated.
  • Helps to de-escalate crisis situations and manage interpersonally difficult situations.
  • Conducts case conferencing and in-service training to the mobile team and participates in clinical trainings along with other CARE Center and COE staff as requested.
  • Provides patient education to meet the needs of the patient/family.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. Registered as a Professional Nurse in the State of New Jersey. 
  • Certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse by the New Jersey Board of Nursing. Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification required.

  • Experience working with patients with substance-use disorders preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Position requires standing, walking, sitting and using hands and arms 2/3 of the time. Also talking and hearing is required 2/3 of the time.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Position requires working in a community setting. Occasional work in a fast-paced, high pressure office environment with moderate noise. Must be able to cooperate with a broad spectrum of staff. Must be able to manage crisis situations and help de-escalate volatile interpersonal situations.
