What You Will Do
 

The successful candidate will perform materials synthesis and characterization experiments supporting the development of next-generation composite materials for national security applications. The development process will encompass additive manufacturing (material formulations/characterizations and processing/building), self-assembly, predictive modeling, and combinations therein. Of particular interest is the successful fabrication and scale-up of “multi-functional” materials that possess specific mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties that are engineered to exhibit enhanced behaviors in these categories simultaneously . This position will be supported jointly by the Mechanical and Thermal Engineering Group (E-1) and the Engineered Materials Group (MST-7).

Exceptional candidates may be considered for a Director's Fellowship and outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious Darleane Christian Hoffman, Richard P. Feynman, J. Robert Oppenheimer, or Frederick Reines Fellowships.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

 

A strong background in one or more of the following technical areas: 


  • Materials synthesis

  • Wet lab chemistry and complex fluids

  • Particle synthesis and powder processing

  • Additive manufacturing

  • Material modeling

  • Composite materials

Outstanding written and oral communication skills as demonstrated by strong records of publications in high impact technical journals, and presentations at national conferences.

 

Ability to work productively on multiple projects as demonstrated by meeting deadlines, milestones and requirements.

 

Ability to work as part of a highly interdisciplinary team of engineers, chemists, material scientists and physicists with minimal supervision.

 

Education:  A Ph.D. in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Polymer Science or a related field completed within the last five years or soon to be completed.

 

Desired Qualifications:


  • Expertise in 3-D printing and other advanced manufacturing techniques

  • Experience in composite materials containing polymers, ceramics, metals, etc.

  • Familiarity with low density solids such as foams and aerogels

  • Familiarity with material property characterization

  • Experience with design for manufacturability

  • Proficiency in engineering design and modeling software such as SolidWorks and Ansys

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States.  Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Q Clearance:  Position will be cleared to this level.  Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

 

*Eligibility requirements:  To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
