JOB SUMMARY

The Center for Open Research Resources & Equipment (COR²E) at the University of Connecticut seeks a full-time Facility Scientist (Academic Assistant 1) to support imaging research at the university. The individual will work in the Advanced Light Microscopy Facility (ALMF) – a vibrant and growing core facility housing six instruments including confocal, lightsheet, TIRF, and super resolution microscopes (confocal.uconn.edu ). Within the ALMF, the Facility Scientist will be responsible for day-to-day microscope maintenance, training facility users on the instruments, and providing ongoing support to researchers in their experimental design, data acquisition, and image analysis. The Facility Scientist will work closely with the Facility Director to support a wide range of microscopy research applications and will be expected to develop a high level of mastery of the instrumentation hardware and software. The successful candidate will be detail oriented and can clearly communicate technical information verbally and in written form.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Take part in the daily maintenance and upkeep of the facility and microscopes.
  • Maintain scheduling and billing in our online instrument management software.
  • Provide instrument training to researchers.
  • Be available to provide hands-on assistance with microscope hardware and software.
  • Demonstrate and practice lab safety procedures.
  • Order supplies needed for facility operation.
  • Take part in the promotion and outreach of the facility to the larger University community.
  • Keep up to date on current developments in the microscopy field.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree and 1 year of experience, or Ph.D. in the biological sciences (or a scheduled Ph.D. completion date prior to the start date).
  • Previous research experience with confocal microscopy.
  • Experience performing immunofluorescence staining.
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency with microscopy instrumentation.
  • Experience with image processing software, such as ImageJ, Imaris, Arivas, Huygens, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to clearly communicate technical information verbally and in written form.
  • Detail oriented.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. in the biological sciences.
  • Experience with STED, TIRF, or lightsheet microscopy.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, end-dated position, subject to annual renewal. Salary will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s background and experience. The work location is at the Storrs campus.
