Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Morehead Planetarium and Science Center is a national leader in informal science education, utilizing the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s resources to educate the public and promote a better understanding of science.
Since its founding in 1949 as the first planetarium on a college campus and the first in the South, millions of North Carolinian students, teachers, and families as well as visitors from around the world have benefitted from Morehead’s science programs.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Morehead played a significant role in expanding humankind’s exploration of the cosmos by training 62 NASA astronauts in celestial navigation, including 11 of the 12 who walked on the Moon. Today, Morehead is inspiring the next generation of scientific explorers through top-notch educational and public programming, including fulldome planetarium shows, interactive exhibits, hands-on classes, summer camps, and statewide outreach like the annual North Carolina Science Festival.

Position Summary
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Admissions & Retail Coordinator supervises and leads box office and retail operations, which includes recruiting, training, and supervising sales assistant student staff, monitoring retail inventory, recommending items for sale in the gift shop, and placing and receiving merchandise orders. The coordinator also regularly collects, reviews, and reports sales and attendance data, and visitor feedback data to the Guest Services Manager. The coordinator also manages and maintains data for show leases and royalties, including invoicing, payment, and reporting.
This position works regularly Tuesday – Saturday, and is responsible for ensuring adequate supervisory coverage for box office and retail operations on Sundays and during special events via either lead sales associate student positions or coordination with other full-time members of the guest services team.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
-Excellent communication skills.
-Experience leading a team of sales associates. 
-Proven track record of delivering results.
-Proven ability to multitask.
-Proven ability to problem solve.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
 -Experience in retail. 
-Experience with the Altru ticketing/sales software, or prior experience with ticketing or retail sales software.
-Experience in admissions/box office.
-Understanding of product placement and display.
-Experience sourcing products for retail environment.
Required Licenses/Certifications
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Requires moving or lifting retail shipments, supplies, and merchandise up to 50 lbs with or without accommodation. 
 
Detail oriented; demonstrated ability to exercise sensitivity and good judgment in dealing with staff and the public; high level of initiative and ability to work independently; integrity/sincerity; excellent customer service skills.
