Position Summary
This position provides assistance to faculty and staff with internal and external communication, building and facilities resources, electronic resources, and department events in the Department of Anthropology. Provides back-up for staffing the department office.


Job Description

This position requires occasional work on evenings and weekends.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Manages internal and external marketing and communications:

  • Maintains digital marketing assets (i.e., website, social media accounts, and content inventory).
  • Contributes to department newsletters, publications, flyers and other publicity.
  • Curates the department's hallway and classroom displays.
  • Manages logistics for annual photo contest.

Plans and executes department and program events:

  • Works with university services and other vendors to secure event space and other logistics.
  • Purchases refreshments and supplies for events or coordinates with outside vendors in adherence with university policies.

Manages department spaces (i.e., offices, labs, seminar rooms, and storage):

  • Acts as liaison with Blue Zone, Facilities Management, and WFF.
  • Initiates work orders and manages building problems, taking special care to protect resources and specimens.
  • Represents department at building and other meetings.
  • Works with faculty, facilities, architects, and contractors on renovations of new and existing spaces, furniture purchases and installation, and office moves.
  • Completes annual planning and space surveys.
  • Maintains department list of equipment locations and serial numbers.

Provides backup support for main office:

  • Staffs the office when the Administrative Assistant is not present.
  • Contributes to general office support for the department.
  • Performs special projects for the Chair and other staff, as needed.

Coordinates lab safety and maintenance:

  • Acts as liaison with university safety committees; attends meetings on lab safety.
  • Coordinates department lab training and safety protocols.
  • Keeps the department current with university lab and environmental policies.
  • Assists with scheduling of lab and equipment maintenance.

Manages technology equipment and use:

  • Acts as liaison with Arts and Sciences Computing for service.
  • Supports and maintains security of data projectors, computers, and lab technology.
  • Trains faculty and staff on use of equipment and troubleshoot problems.

Maintains department archives and files:

  • Curates department archives.
  • Prepares undergraduate and graduate bulletins (bi-annually).

Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with a wide range of stakeholders on varied projects.
  • Experience problem solving under pressure.
  • Social media and marketing experience.
  • Graphic design experience.
  • Experience with content management systems.
  • Project management and/or event planning experience.
  • Knowledge of Washington University policies and culture.
  • Knowledge of or interest in anthropology.
  • Intermediate computer skills including knowledge of computer applications and programs including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills to deal effectively with a broad and diverse range of people.
  • In-depth knowledge of office procedures.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.


Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent high school certification.
  • Two years of administrative office experience.

Salary Range
$18.36 - $28.47 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
