Job Summary

The Research Administration Administrative Assistant at the Huntsman Cancer Institute works directly with the Research Administration staff and leadership and is essential to the success of the researchers the department supports. Members of our team perform a diverse set of tasks at a challenging and rewarding tempo in a nationally recognized NCI Designated Cancer Center. The ideal candidate is someone who intends to stay with us for at least three years, during which time he/she can expect to gain experience and training which can translate into a long-term administrative career with the University of Utah, a Pac-12 school with fantastic benefits.

This position provides complex administrative support among various teams within the Research Administration department, including:

• Pre-Award Grants and Contracts Officers Team
• Post-Award Grants and Contracts Officers Team
• Administrative Support Team
• Research Development Team
• Senior Administrative Team

This position is considered Category I: Mandatory and required on campus or health care facilities to support on-site operations. Employees hired into this category will be required to be physically located at HCI if they are healthy and without COVID-19 symptoms.


Essential Functions
1. Assists department with business planning, hiring and goal setting.
2. Collects, organizes and analyzes data for specialized and regular monthly/quarterly reports.
3. Assists with the implementation of department and University policies and procedures.
4. Provides administrative support to upper-level department management by scheduling appointments, coordinating meetings and conferences and maintaining and ordering office supplies.
5. Travel planning and reimbursement for various members of the department

Problem Solving & Organization
This position is responsible for solving office problems. Desirable candidate will have demonstrated a strong organizational capacity, ability to balance priorities and ensure follow through with a diverse set of responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate degree in business or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education) and three years full-time secretarial experience required. Demonstrated human relations and effective written and verbal communication skills required. Knowledge of basic bookkeeping practices and direct supervisory experience preferred.
