Since 1969, Africana Studies has been a leader in interdisciplinary education for and about descendants of Africa in the United States and the diaspora. Our curriculum interrogates the significance and ongoing impact of the histories and legacies of enslavement and colonialism. Our renowned faculty advance the Department's mission to engage in research that is accessible and relevant to Black communities and develops deeper and broader understandings of justice and freedom.

National Council for Black Studies (NCBS) is the premier disciplinary organization concerned with disseminating research and pedagogical approaches that illuminate encounters of African descended peoples as subjects of their experiences. The organization welcomes the participation of scholars, activists, and community practitioners as they work collectively to encourage academic excellence and social responsibility.

The Administrative Assistant III will work with the National Council for Black Studies (NCBS) to increase the membership base and handle all services to member institutions. This position will also work with the Department of Africana Studies as determined by the National Director. The position also requires travel to the annual conference.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Director with assembling information, spreadsheets, formatting, disseminating, etc. Assemble information from internet sources as well as marketing data and systems analysis and web and digital interfacing that can be utilized to support the work of the National Council for Black Studies.
  • Gather information on accounts payable, accounts receivable, and all bank related activities, foundation accounts, and NBUF Grants as well as financial knowledge of administrative systems to support the national office.
  • Manage all email correspondence between executive leadership, board of directors, and NCBS membership (email blasts). Produce quarterly electronic newsletters and maintain membership database system.
  • Manage all meeting planner duties.
  • Coordinate annual conference of the NCBS in concert with the vice president and the conference committee. Act as conference liaison with hotel personnel, handle management of all registration, and advertising, as well as other duties that may be requested by executive leadership, such as correspondence with speakers, registrants, and any other related duties defined by the national director.
  • Perform administrative tasks for the International Journal of Africana Studies, including mailing journals and tracking to whom they have been sent as well as any other related duties as defined by the national director.
  • Correspond with contributors and subscribers to NCBS Annual Report.
  • Perform other job-related duties based on the organization’s needs as well as some needs of the Department of Africana Studies, as defined by the national director.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED and three years of related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Strong administrative, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong time-management and skills, ability to work within time restraints, and ability to multitask.
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Adobe, QuickBooks or Quicken, and web management.
  • Experience with or ability to learn All Academic.
  • Effective financial and marketing skills.
  • Experience setting priorities, producing timely results, multi-tasking and meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to work independently, under limited supervision.
  • Working knowledge of University financial and operating policies and procedures preferred.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.
