Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History is part of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a Center within the University’s Academic Affairs Division, we have a central role in supporting the University’s academic mission. We have a commitment to broaden the range of intellectual discourse about African-Americans and to encourage better understanding of people of the African diaspora and their perspectives on important social and cultural issues
Position Summary
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Administrative Support Associate role is designed to primarily support the Moore Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (MURAP) and Students Learning to Advance Truth & Equity (SLATE). MURAP (established 1996) seeks to increase the number of individuals holding faculty positions within the academy. The program recruits 20 students annually (typically 10 weeks during the summer), where they conduct research, receive training, and participate in other development activities to prepare them for success in graduate school. SLATE (founded 2019) is an undergraduate education program established in response to ongoing concerns about how students are prepared to navigate the complex world in which we live. Students involved in SLATE activities participate in unique research and learning experiences, designed to strengthen their grasp on the realities of negotiating the complexities of our world as global citizens.
The Administrative Support Associate contributes to the administration of wide-ranging internal and external functions including correspondence and communications, event coordination, budget management, webpage maintenance, and outreach. The Administrative Support Associate is responsible for managing the administrative, programming, communication, and outreach needs for the programs to maintain their success and support the faculty and students within them.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Acknowledgment of commitment to the programs: The position requires a thorough understanding of and support for the mission, goals, and activities of programs and a deep awareness of the organizational structure, services, and procedures. 
- Information/ Records Administration: Coordinates varied records processing activities requiring the application and some interpretation of agency procedures and policies. The position also requires an ability to perform research, data collection, and analysis of information as needed. Reviews information for completeness and accuracy using multiple guidelines. 
- Communication – Verbal: Presents ideas in a clear, concise, and organized manner. Explains and interprets programs, policies, and procedures to meet the specific needs of Director’s and students. Advises staff in all matters related to program operations.
- Communication – Written: Composes and organizes ideas logically, works in multiple formats and can adjust style to meet the needs of the program and audience. Reviews sensitive materials and edits content constructively.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Advanced knowledge of office productivity software, i.e.. Microsoft Office, Teams, and Zoom. 
- Interface with the Provost Business Operations team to oversee payments to program participants.
