Job Title:

Adjunct Professor - MFA in Writing Program

Job Summary:

The MFA in Writing Program at the University of San Francisco invites applications for a pool of qualified part-time instructors to teach on-site, in-person classes for 2023.

Full Job Description:

This position seeks experienced instructors of creative writing to teach one graduate-level course a semester in creative writing—a workshop, craft seminar, or directed-study thesis course. We seek instructors of poetry and nonfiction, but currently have the greatest need for fiction instructors.

In its commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the MFA in Writing Program seeks to give writers from any background the skills, compassion, and sense of justice to engage in dialogue with the ever-changing world. Our small classes, held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, promote communal, supportive learning.

Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed, with some appointments beginning as early as the Spring 2023 semester. The number of these temporary, part-time, non-tenure track, academic positions vary from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the program. Appointments are offered on a course-by-course basis, and appointment length is based upon course section schedule(s). Appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance.

Part time faculty at USF are unionized and benefits are listed on the USF Part Time Faculty Association’s website here: https://www.usfptfa.org. Course pay, set by the union, is competitive for the region. MFA adjunct faculty get a small stipend to pay writers and publishing professionals to visit their course, and may propose new MFA courses after teaching for two semesters in the program.

Minimum qualifications:

Graduate degree in creative writing or related field (MFA or PhD preferred)

Strong publication record, with at least one book of fiction, nonfiction, or poetry published by start of appointment

Experience teaching university students (graduate level preferred)

Commitment to support the mission of the MFA Program and the University of San Francisco.

Willingness to work in a culturally diverse environment, including LGBTQ+ and BIPOC students, local or international, amongst many other denominations and backgrounds.

Submission instructions:

Applicants can apply at http://usfjobs.com. Applicants should submit a C.V., a cover letter, and a statement on diversity and inclusion—including your thoughts and experiences concerning equitable education for underserved and marginalized communities, your commitment to or experience with broadening participation in the field, your experience working on a diverse team, and/or your experience working with different communication/learning styles.
