Job Summary:

The University of San Francisco is seeking a part-time instructor for one section of HIST 125 - African American History for the fall semester of 2024, and possibly in future semesters. USF is a residential campus and our classes are taught in-person.

Full Job Description:

HIST 125 - African American History meets USF’s Core C2 History requirement (general education curriculum), and thus serves students from across the University. HIST 125 is also foundational for several affiliated programs, including the African-American Studies minor, the Critical Diversity Studies Major, and the BASE Marshall-Riley Living-Learning Community , which serves first- and second-year students with a shared interest in the historical, intellectual, and political traditions of the Black Diaspora.

HIST 125 introduces students to the diverse experiences of African Americans throughout U.S. history and their impact on American politics, economy and culture. Topics will include slave life and resistance, quests for citizenship, military involvement, and the rise of the Black Nationalist and Civil Rights Movements.

Enrollment is capped at 40 students. 

PhD in History preferred, but ABDs are invited to apply.  Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis, with the goal of filling the position before registration for fall 2024 classes begins in mid-March.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in History (or ABD)

  • Experience teaching broad surveys in a university environment.

  • Experience in course development, including creating course objectives and assignments.

  • Commitment to support the mission of the University of San Francisco.

  • Willingness to work with diverse student needs. 

  • Effective verbal/written communication and presentation skills.

  • Ability to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information.

The need for temporary, part-time, non-tenure track, academic positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the program.

Appointments are offered on a course-by-course basis, and appointment length is based upon course section schedule(s). Appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance.
