Job Summary:

The History Department at the University of San Francisco invites applications for a pool of qualified, temporary, part-time instructors to teach on-site, in-person classes for our program.

Full Job Description:


This position seeks candidates from the field of History who can teach undergraduate, 100-level survey classes in multiple fields. A list of survey courses taught in our program is available in our course catalog  and includes:

HIST 110 - European Civilization

HIST 115 - European/U.S. History
HIST 120 - History of the U.S.

HIST 125 - African American History

HIST 126 - Asian American History
HIST 127 - Women in US History

HIST 128 - Ideal of Citizenship

HIST 130 - East Asian Civilizations

HIST 135 - Indian Civilizations

HIST 140 - Latin American Perspectives

HIST 150 - Modern African History

HIST 160 - World History



The number of these temporary, part-time, non-tenure track, academic positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the program. Appointments are offered on a course-by-course basis, and appointment length is based upon course section schedule(s). Appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in History(or ABD)
  • Experience teaching broad surveys capped at 40 students in a university environment.
  • Experience in course development, including creating course objectives and assignments.
  • Commitment to support the mission  of the University of San Francisco.
  • Willingness to work with diverse student needs. 
  • Effective verbal/written communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information.
