Position Description:

The Catholic University of America, Biology Department is always seeking qualified candidates for adjunct lecturer positions. Adjunct lecturers are hired on an as-needed basis.

Course: BIOL418 Physiology Lecture and Laboratory Lectures: M/W/F 9:40 – 10:40 am

Lab: M/W 2:10-5:00 pm (2 separate sections of the same labs)

The Adjunct is asked to give the lecture portion of the course (1 section) and to direct the two lab sections of the course. One to two teaching assistants are assigned to the teaching labs.

Semester: January 10 – May 7, 2022

Course Description: This course examines how the various systems of the human body work together to sustain life. Students will gain a basic understanding of major physiological mechanisms at the organ, cellular, and molecular-levels. Lecture material is augmented with practical laboratory exercises to demonstrate and practice scientific concepts.

Lecture Topics:

  • Introduction, homeostasis

  • Cell membrane/membrane transport

  • Neurons and action potentials

  • Synapse and neurotransmitters

  • Skeletal muscle

  • Smooth muscle

  • Cardiac Muscle & cardiac cycle

  • Blood & lymphatic vessels

  • Cardiac output

  • Capillary exchange & blood volume

  • Peripheral resistance, blood flow, blood pressure

  • Respiration: structure & mechanics, hemoglobin

  • Kidney: structure/function, glomerular filtration,

    reabsorption in PCT/DCT, acid-base balance

  • Digestion: mouth to stomach, small/large intestine, liver/gall bladder/pancreas

Course Material: Lab manual and PowerPoint slides will be provided.


Education and Experience: Terminal degree preferred. Teaching or training experience preferred.
