Job Description

Danville Community College developed from two institutions, Danville Technical Institute and the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute opened in 1936 as Danville Textile School, becoming Danville Technical Institute just after World War II. The Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute first began as an engineering division in 1946 and was later expanded to include the first two years of course work for all engineering, business administration, liberal arts, and science majors.  Beginning in the summer of 1966, all programs taught by Danville Technical Institute were brought under the Virginia Department of Community Colleges. Effective July 1, 1968, the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute merged with the existing community college providing the comprehensive programs now offered.
The primary role is to teach classes for nurse aide preparation to pass state boards.
Instructional personnel who assist the primary instructor in providing classroom or clinical supervision shall be a registered nurse. Applicant shall assist with instruction, skill lab, and clinical rotation of the 68-Hour Registered Medication Aide program.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
Hold a current, unrestricted VA license or multistate licensure privilege as a registered nurse and have had at least one year of direct client geriatric care experience as a registered nurse.
Other instructional personnel shall provide instruction under the supervision of the primary instructor.
Prior to being assigned to teach in a nurse aide education program, all instructional personnel shall demonstrate competence to teach adults or high school students by one the following:
  • Satisfactory completion of at least 12 hours of coursework that includes: 
  • Basic principles of adult learning
  • Teaching method and tools of adult learners
  • Evaluation strategies and measurement tools for assessing student learning outcomes
  • Review of current regulations for nurse aide training programs
  • Review of the board-approved nurse aide curriculum content; and
  • Review of the skills evaluated on the board-approved nurse aide certification examination; 
  • or have experience in teaching the curriculum content and skills evaluated on the board-approved nurse aide certification examination to adults or high school students; and
  • knowledge of current regulations for nurse aides and nurse aide education programs.

To remain qualified to teach the nurse aide curriculum, instructional personnel shall complete a refresher course every (3) years that includes a review of the regulations for NA and NA education programs and skills evaluated on the board-approved NA certification examination.
The applicant should have a completed Train-The-Trainer for Nurse Aide Instructor certification or complete prior to instruction in the classroom.
For Medication Aide:
Hold current, active, unrestricted license or a multistate licensure privilege.
  • Successfully complete a course, including a post-course examination, that is designed to prepare the instructor to teach the medication aide curriculum approved by the board for administration of medications to clients in assisted living facilities. The course shall include adult learning principles and evaluation strategies and shall be completed prior to teaching a course in a medication aide program.
  • Participate in the planning of each learning experience and be responsible for the teaching and evaluation of students
  • Maintain student records as required by 18VAC90-60-70B.
