Job Description

Position Summary

 

Provides in-person instruction in a part-time, non-benefits eligible position for the Intensive Legal English Program (ILEP), a 4-week summer program for non-native English-speaking students entering graduate programs in Washington University in St. Louis School of Law. The ILEP curriculum consists of advanced-level ESL courses which focus on communication skills specific to law school and the legal profession. The goal of the program is to provide students with the English skills necessary to be successful in their law school and beyond. ILEP 2024 will run from July 8 to August 2.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Teach in-person course(s) for the Intensive Legal English Program (ILEP), including but not limited to planning, grading, and routine communication with students to address individual questions.
  • Fulfill administrative duties related to the course(s) taught, including but not limited to monitoring the accuracy of the roster and communicating with students and the Coordinator of Legal English Programs about Law School and University policies.
  • Develop and/or revise course materials in collaboration with ILEP colleagues and the Coordinator of Legal English Programs.
  • Participate in instructor orientation/planning meetings prior to the start of the program and weekly instructor meetings during the course of the program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Teaching English as a Second Language, Applied Linguistics, or a related field.
  • Certificate or coursework in Applied Linguistics/Teaching English as a Second Language if the master’s degree is in a field other than Applied Linguistics or TESL.
  • Two years of ESL/EFL teaching experience in a higher education setting, corporate setting, and/or intensive English program for adult learners.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use web-based applications to access rosters, submit grades, and complete other course management tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching Legal English or English for Specific Purposes, i.e., teaching to meet the unique English language demands of specific fields of work/study.
  • Experience studying or working outside the United States for a significant length of time.
  • High degree of proficiency in at least one language in addition to English.
  • Education in law or work experience in a law-related field.
