About the Sociology Department

The Drexel Department of Sociology conducts research grounded in sociological theory and methodologies informed by collaborative work with diverse communities. Our scholarship engages with local and global field sites, research questions, and connections. We engage in pedagogy that is mutually produced with our students and the communities with whom we work. Our research, teaching, and service intersect in three major subfields: environmental sociology, health and medical sociology, and urban sociology. 

Job Summary

The adjunct faculty member will employ a variety of strategies to foster student learning and discussions, as well as encourage active learning in all students, maintain proper course-related records, and evaluate student work and provide students with feedback as to the progress toward meeting the objectives of the course. Each adjunct faculty member is responsible for effectively teaching students in the assigned classroom or online. Responsibilities may include teaching days or evenings, with the potential for online only, in-person only, or a combination of both.

The Sociology Department is hiring adjuncts to teach the following courses: Introduction to Sociology, Sociology of Health and Illness, Sex and Society, Sex and the City, Social Problems, Sociology of Health Professions, Race, Ethnicity, and Social Justice, Classical Social Theory, and Contemporary Social Theory.

Essential Functions

  • Teach required number of credit hours per quarter based on contract.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills related to teaching methodology, curriculum development and evaluation.
  • Evaluate student achievement of curricular objectives/outcomes.
  • Schedule two office hours per week for student availability.
  • Schedule administrative time for course preparation.
  • Maintain communication with the department head regarding any course or student issues.
  • Perform other similar duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Sociology or a closely related field
