Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Iowa State University Department of Plant Pathology, Entomology, and Microbiology, Ames, IA, is seeking applicants for the position of Adjunct Assistant Professor in Integrated Pest Management (IPM). This is a 12-month, term faculty position with responsibilities in extension (75%) and teaching (25%). We wish to hire a dedicated, innovative, and passionate educator with experience in curriculum development, teaching and or familiarity with IPM, but more specifically, crop disease management. The initial term for this position is three years with the possibility of renewal.

For extension, the candidate is to develop crop-related educational curricula and related materials. This will be for the Crop Protection Network (CPN), which is a multi-state and international collaboration of university and provincial extension specialists, public, and private professionals dedicated to providing unbiased, research-based information to farmers and agricultural personnel. This candidate will create and coordinate the CPN Academy, a new educational initiative that will deliver web-based learning material to diverse audiences interested or already working in crop protection fields. 

The candidate is also expected to develop and deliver an innovative, student-centered teaching program focused on the science and practice of IPM for field crops. The candidate will seek collaborative relationships with fellow IPM specialists in Iowa and across the country for the benefit of the students enrolled in our program. Teaching expectations include preparing and delivering undergraduate or graduate courses within the Department of Plant Pathology, Entomology, and Microbiology related to IPM. These could include existing courses such as Agron 544 (Host-Pest Interactions) or new courses related to the candidate’s interests.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • M.S. degree in Plant Pathology or related field by time of hire.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree in Plant Pathology or related field by time of hire.

  • Relevant knowledge and experience with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) related to field crops

  • Relevant knowledge and experience in the practice and teaching of IPM topics

  • Knowledge and experience with developing and delivering extension material to farmers, youth, agriculture specialists, and/or students in multiple formats (e.g., written, audio, video, interactive tools)

  • Experience in developing and implementing stakeholder needs assessments to direct programming

  • Potential to contribute to the Crop Protection Network, Department, and University’s efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion


Department/Program & College Description:

The Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology and the Department of Entomology officially merged as of September 1, 2022. The new department is known as the Department of Plant Pathology, Entomology, and Microbiology (PPEM). The overall mission of the Department is to benefit society through research, teaching, and extension activities that improve pest management and prevent disease. Collectively, the Department consists of about 100 faculty, staff, and students who are engaged in research, teaching, and extension activities that are central to the mission of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The Department possesses state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities in the Advanced Research and Teaching Building and in Science II. In addition, research and extension activities are performed off-campus at the Field Extension Education Laboratory, the Horticulture Station, the Agriculture Engineering/Agronomy Farm, and several Research and Demonstration Farms located around the state. Furthermore, the Department houses the Plant and Insect Diagnostic Clinic, the Iowa Soybean Research Center, the Insect Zoo, and BugGuide. Several USDA-ARS scientists are also affiliated with the Department.
