The University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) is seeking a skilled technician to manage, operate, and maintain metal additive manufacturing (AM) and machining equipment across multiple metal AM labs (UDRI main campus and Dayton Composites Center). Work will include operation and advancement of both commercial EOS and Concept Laser systems as well as custom open architecture LPBF machines and all supporting equipment. The technician will work with lab managers and scientists to prepare parts for printing/manufacturing via CAD/CAM and operate equipment in accordance with research objectives. The ability to make machine modifications and troubleshoot one-of-a-kind systems is highly important. The overarching goals of these labs are to better understand the effects of laser manufacturing processes on materials, and to design, build, and operate next generation AM machines.

Minimum Qualifications:

T2 – Position
• High school graduation or its equivalent.
• 3 year’s experience operating metal AM machines.
• Experience with machining equipment.
• Experience with CAD/CAM software.
• Ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally.
• Ability to work well with others in a team environment and motivate fellow team members.
• Due to requirements of our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be a U.S. Citizen.

T3 – Position
All T2 requirements plus 8 years’ experience.

T4 – Position
All T3 requirements plus 12 years’ experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

• Associates Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Technology.
• Experience operating metal AM machines, laser powder bed fusion machines preferred.
• Experience operating laser-based manufacturing equipment in support of research.
• Experience with EOS M290 and M400 Series multi-laser systems.
• Metal AM lab build up experience.
• Working knowledge of GD&T.
• Ability to generate part drawings.
• Machining/fabrication experience (CNC Mill and Lathe is a plus).
• Experience with mechanical testing and specimen fabrication.
• Basic understanding of data acquisition and analysis concepts.
