Position Summary
The Adaptive Technology Coordinator is under the general supervision of the Director of the Student Disability Resource Center. This individual serves as a resource in the area of assistive technology to faculty, staff and students; oversees the conversion of instructional materials into alternative media formats; provides expertise in web design, electronic documents, and distance education delivery methods to ensure accessible format for disabled persons.
Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 9,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 166,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Administer Campus Assistive Technology Site License agreements.
  • Develop and coordinate effective adaptive technology programming.
  • Help ensure the University is in compliance with the Vocational Rehabilitation Act, Section 504 and Section 508 and the Americans with Disabilities Act as amended 2008 requirements concerning disability issues.
  • Coordinate, train and support qualified students with disabilities on the use of adaptive technology.
  • Coordinate in-service training for students, staff, faculty and administrators working with students with disabilities on the use of adaptive technology.
  • Coordinate, train and supervise students/graduate assistants on the use of adaptive technology
  • Troubleshoot assistive technology issues.
  • Assist students in the management of their accommodations.
  • Coordinate the conversion of instructional materials into alternate media format
  • Coordinate communication between students and faculty requesting alternate media formats.
  • Coordinate activities in the Access labs on campus and Fort Campbell.
  • Maintain effective accommodations for SDRC students within the SDRC computer lab and across campus to provide access to educational information through adaptive software.
  • Work with technology vendors and tech support personnel in order to manage registration and warranty information on all adaptive technology.
  • Serve as ex-officio member to the Technology Committee, University Committee for Persons with Disabilities, University Web Committee and other committees as deemed appropriate.
  • Maintain data base for reporting on- and off-campus.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to use and understand Intel-based personal computers running MS Windows and/or Macintosh and new applications when deemed appropriate.

  • Promote the accessible design of APSU’s Web, CMS, LMS multimedia and programs for equal access for persons with disabilities.
  • Manage SDRC Web and online media development, support AT application and SDRC file server(s) on the APSU network, integrate SDRC data into the Banner system.
  • Ability to use Banner and integrate SDRC data into the Banner system.
  • Knowledge of file format processes and software applications used in alternate media production.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to Americans with Disabilities Act, Vocational Rehabilitation Sections 504 and 508 and access to technology.
  • Ability to use specialized equipment, hardware and software including screen reading, screen magnification, text-to-speech, voice recognition software, desktop control, closed captioning, optical character recognition (OCR), e-text conversion, conversion to Braille, ergonomic positioning and other assistive technology.
Physical Requirements
  • Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • A minimum of one year experience working with computer applications/software.
  • Experience working with students, accommodations, disability, or relevant field.
  • A background check will be required of the successful applicant.
