Job Description Summary:
The ADA Coordinator has primary responsibility for maintaining a comprehensive academic accommodation program and for ensuring compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the ADAAA, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act in the execution of that program. This responsibility includes receiving, assessing, and maintaining institutional response to requests for disability-related accommodations from applicants and students. The incumbent further assists with providing effective, timely and on-going education around the university's academic accommodation policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Higher Education or a related field and 2 years-experience overseeing or evaluating academic accommodation requests for students or residents; Or associate’s degree in Education, Counseling, Higher Education or a related field and 4 years-experience overseeing or evaluating academic accommodation requests for students or residents.

Work Experience:

  • Knowledge and understanding of civil rights laws, particularly ADA and Section 504, and familiarity with relevant case law.

  • Previous work experience that demonstrates sensitivity, awareness, and abilities needed to establish and maintain effective relationships with diverse groups of people.

  • Experience in word processing, spreadsheets, and database software.

  • Strong communication as evidenced by application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Master's degree in related field.

Work Experience:

  • 1-year professional experience developing and implementing a comprehensive Academic Accommodations program.

  • Experience working in a higher education setting.

  • Experience in developing and conducting ADA training.

Job Duties:

Essential Functions

  • Manage the KU Medical Center academic accommodation process and coordinate institutional efforts to ensure equal access to and the provision of reasonable accommodations for equal participation in academic programs, services and activities;

  • Oversee process for providing accommodations due to pregnancy-related illnesses, childbirth or adoption;  

  • Maintain an effective intake process for handling accommodation requests;

  • Review and interpret documentation submitted by students and engage in the interactive process to identify appropriate reasonable accommodations;

  • Create and maintain appropriate confidential records;

  • Stay informed of updates, emerging issues, best practices and changes to relevant law;

  • Assist with the development and/or revision of policies and procedures designed to meet compliance requirements of the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

  • Assist in providing education and training to the KU Medical Center community to enhance awareness of ADA rights and requirements and related University policies.

Additional Functions

  • Provide advice and assistance to departments and programs in identifying accommodation resources;

  • Monitor the delivery and implementation of accommodations, including arranging for proctoring of exams as needed;

  • Maintain accurate and complete case files;

  • Engage with community advocates and organizations focused on the advancement of education, accommodations and resources for students with disabilities;

  • Assist in the review of program technical standards as needed.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
