Description of Work Unit
The Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Biology Department expands the frontiers of knowledge through our broad-based expertise in applied ecology, quantitative methods, and human dimensions in the conservation and management of fish and wildlife. We teach students to think critically about environmental issues, and become ecologically literate citizens with the training to be successful in graduate school and in careers with natural resources agencies, firms, and non-government organizations. Our outreach efforts contribute significantly to life-long learning by assisting individuals and agencies to solve complex environmental problems and to be good stewards of our nation’s natural resources.
Position Summary
The successful candidate will work in collaboration with Colorado State University and National Park Service scientists to manage the CSU Undergraduate Listening Lab and to analyze and publish research on soundscapes, bioacoustic conditions, and the relationships between noise and wildlife using the large NPS acoustic dataset. The CSU scientists (PI’s: Lisa Angeloni, Kevin Crooks, George Wittemyer, and Sara Bombaci) are part of a collaborative research team with NPS partners (PI’s: Karen Trevino, Christopher Kavanagh, Emma Brown, and Cathleen Balantic) in the Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division (NSNSD), within the Natural Resource Stewardship and Science Directorate (NRSS) located in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Required Job Qualifications
Ph.D. degree in a pertinent biological, physical, or computer science field by start date of position.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Demonstrated competency in management and analysis of large datasets.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring others in a scientific context.
  • Record of scholarly publication.
  • Experience in acoustics and/or using specialized acoustic software (Raven, SongScope, Ishmael, MATLAB, SonoBat, etc.) and relevant data analysis tools (R and/or Python).
  • Experience collaborating with diverse groups including academic faculty, staff, and graduate/undergraduate students on data analysis and research.
  • Personal and professional commitment to diversity as demonstrated by involvement in teaching, research, creative activity, service to the profession and/or diversity/inclusion activities.

  • Manage daily operations (including scheduling, data management, data quality assessment, recruiting, and training) by supervising undergraduates at the CSU undergraduate listening lab
  • Process acoustical data to identify sound sources and extract quantitative measures relevant to park unit management issues
  • Securely archive data analysis results for future use by NPS/CSU scientists
  • Prepare data summaries and technical reports for publication and to meet the needs of NPS scientists
