The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) at Cornell University is a global leader in research directed toward understanding the fundamental processes that have shaped our planet and is committed to providing Cornell students with the earth literacy needed to serve as informed citizens and wise stewards of the Earth. EAS is across college department with oversight of finance and accounting in a COE and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) KFS organizations. In addition, EAS enrolls students from three colleges, COE, CALS and Arts and Sciences (CAS).

The Accounts Representative V position provides financial and administrative services and management as they relate to departmental funds (appropriated, discretionary, restricted, and sponsored) reporting to the Director of Administration. This includes financial accounting and transactions, oversight of procurement, student appointments and bursar payments, and compliance and stewardship of resources. The incumbent maintains internal and external audit compliance, ensuring that internal controls are developed, monitored and maintained.


This position provides financial support to the Director of Administration and the Director as well as financial support to faculty, researchers, graduate students, undergraduates and staff, Proactive and retroactive research and problem solving is an integral part of the job as well as facilitating appropriate actions and communicating accordingly, professionally, and concisely. The incumbent interprets, informs, and applies University policies, procedures, and practices.


What We Need

  • Associates Degree and four to six years of financial or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Previous experience with complex financial accounting
  • Ability to apply excellent analytical skills to research/understand/solve problems; to determine path, facilitate outcomes, and document/report accordingly
  • Ability to retrieve and manipulate data from multiple sources and online warehouses
  • Proven attention to detail as well as an understanding of disparate data structures, their relationships and interdependencies
  • Highly proficient user of spreadsheet and database software
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential data with discretion
  • Ability to work in a busy, team-focused, and customer-driven environment
  • Proven ability to multi-task and work accurately within tight deadlines

What We Prefer

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field with five to ten years of applicable experience, preferably including sponsored and restricted funds management
  • Familiarity with the Cornell University accounting and HR systems, structure and policies
  • Excellent communication skills (listening, reading, writing, verbal - all with an ability to effectively engage with a diverse population)
  • Ability to independently plan and prioritize responsibilities
  • Thrive in a complex, multi-faceted and demanding/deadline driven environment
  • Operate in a team environment and contribute effectively to both individual and team goals
