In the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Department of Entomology is located on both the Ithaca and Geneva campus.  Their mission is threefold: To pursue studies to understand basic and applied aspects of insect biology; to provide a robust and modern curriculum as part of preeminent undergraduate and graduate programs; and to inform and educate the public about the issues related to insects and other arthropods.  The Department of Entomology has 23 faculty and senior academics in Ithaca and 13 within the Geneva campus.  Under the direction of the DBA and working in conjunction with the CALS Financial Transaction Center (FTC) in Ithaca and Geneva when needed, provide financial and accounting support to the Department of Entomology.

As a provider of financial services to the Department and in conjunction with the department business administrator (DBA), make appropriate judgments about financial activities in a manner that coincides with university policies as they relate to account management, grant and contract management, sponsored project accountability, college reporting, accountability for funds management, and proposal support.  Establish close working relationship(s) with administrative manager (AM), faculty, and staff.  Establish and maintain close working relationships with the CALS FTC.  Work within a team environment to provide the most efficient and streamlined processes for the department and the college.  Obtain sponsored programs certificate training and stay updated on changes in University policies and procedures as they relate to financial processes.

Required Qualifications:

  • Formal training beyond a HS Diploma of 1 to 2 years; 2 years college coursework, or Associates Degree; more than 2 years and less than 4 years’ experience.

  • Accounting experience and/or formal coursework in accounting applications is required.  Must be able to understand and accurately apply account numbers, object codes, rules, and policies to transactions and understand impact on financial statements.

  • Must be able to compile, analyze, and report on complex financial data.

  • Must have previous experience in research administration, including pre-proposal submission and post-award financial management.

  • Must have excellent customer service skills and demonstrated ability to communicate and work with a broad range of people.  Attention to detail, organizational skills and prioritization skills are required.

  • Able to work quickly & effectively under pressure, use judgment in accomplishing tasks that are urgent or of a sensitive or confidential nature; balance conflicting priorities, and make decisions from a range of choices.

  • Demonstrates accountability in all work responsibilities.

  • Demonstrate a high-level of proficiency with Excel, and experience with other standard office programs.

  • Must be comfortable working in an environment where change in process/procedures is the norm.

  • Proceed alone on regular tasks, consulting with supervisor on questionable situations.

  • Must be able to work independently while supporting the efforts of an overall team.  

  • Must be able and willing to enhance personal knowledge, skills, and abilities as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.

  • 2-4 years concentrated experience in a financial office setting.

  • Expertise in Excel.

  • Familiarity with Cornell University or other higher education environment.
