Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The School of Education is an academic unit reporting to the Provost. The School is a major center of research, teaching, and public service within the State of North Carolina, the nation, and the world. The School offers a full range of undergraduate and graduate programs. The mission of the School of Education is to conduct research, and generate basic and applied knowledge about human development, educational technology and entrepreneurship, teaching and learning, school counseling, school psychology, administration, as well as educational policy and leadership; prepare leaders in the profession of education by conducting outstanding research, teaching, and service; and assist in the development of strong and effective public schools in North Carolina. In order to fulfill its mission, the School is organized into three academic divisions: (1) Culture, Curriculum, & Teacher Education (CCATE), (2) Learning, Development & Psychological Sciences (LDPS), and (3) Educational Policy, Organization, & Leadership (EPOL).
Position Summary
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Accountant is responsible for day-to-day financial and business operations matters associated with the School of Education. Primary responsibilities include budget and expenditure reconciliation, financial reporting, financial analysis and consultation, salary distribution management, and other related duties. Additionally, duties performed by this position include budget transfers, budget journals, fund swaps, Payroll Accounting Adjustment Tool (PAAT) actions, lump sum payments, complex journal entries, and source creations. This role may provide budget assistance, process tuition, fees, and award payments to students. The accountant will provide technical assistance and training to other employees on University and School accounting systems, policies and procedures. This position reports to the Director of Finance and ensures compliance with all transactions related to the School’s funds. Work involves establishing and maintaining internal account ledgers which accurately project salaries, encumbrances and expenditures each fiscal year. The accountant will monitor multiple funding sources: state appropriations, state-appropriated receipts, contracts and grants, facilities and administrative funds, education and technology fees, foundation, and other trust funds. This position reviews and reconciles all transactions posted in PeopleSoft for accuracy, reviews expenditures from the various funding sources, and provides reports to assist in reconciling budgets and projecting expenses.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Entry-level with Masters; or Bachelors and 0-2 yrs experience
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* It is essential for the accountant to possess a thorough knowledge of general accounting principles and practices and be able to interpret financial and accounting data. 
* Experience with applying technical accounting is required. 
* The accountant must possess excellent communication skills; listening and interpretive; written and oral for documentation. 
* Efficiency in Microsoft Suite is critical. 
* Ability to assess the accuracy, validity, and integrity of data. 
* Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work with deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* Experience working at UNC or in higher education is preferred. 
* A strong knowledge of the UNC Chapel Hill business accounting procedures and regulations on state, overhead, and trust accounts is preferred. 
* The ideal candidate is proficient in PeopleSoft, Concur, and Tableau report.

* The ability to lift/ move up to 30 lbs. with or without accommodation. 
* The ability to handle high stress situations and to concentrate in fast-paced environment.
