Job Description

The Accountant is responsible for a wide array of fiscal accounting functions, including but not limited to:

  • Managing and processing of Federal Return to Title IV/Pell Recalculation/Overawards; including monitoring of students’ withdrawals and final grades in order to comply with federal regulations on Return to Title IV requirements; preparing worksheets and processing them; working with the Office of Financial Assistance on processing the returns; notifying students of amounts due in compliance with collection policies and procedures; coordination with Student Fiscal Services accounts receivable area for student repayment balances and collection activity.
  • Processing of Right to Cancel emails pursuant to federal Title IV regulations, which includes providing assistance to students on procedures for cancelling loans.
  • Reconciliation of the University community scholarship and 3rd party sponsor programs; balancing scholarship and sponsor accounts on a monthly basis; identifying balancing issues and resolving them in a timely and efficient manner; creating Ad Hoc Payments to return funds to donors and sponsors in a timely manner, when necessary.
  • Processing of Nonresident Alien (NRA) Tax Compliance for international students/suppliers for tax withholding determination on scholarships, gifts, prizes and awards, and services. 
  • Sales tax reporting for the university to the State of Kansas on a monthly basis; includes balancing of funds and cost centers for sales tax; maintenance of tax rates/codes in Workday and CASHNet, as well as maintenance of tax exempt certificate documentation for cash sales.
  • Daily bank account transactions, wires, and reconciliation processes.
  • Allocation of credit card fees on a monthly basis.

OTHER ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide customer support for internal and external customers through phone, email, or in-person with questions, concerns, or problems related to particular account functions, university programs, or regulations.
  • Maintain working knowledge of financial regulations, accounting best practices, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Review and audit transactions and ensure that all are compliant with university policies, procedures, and administrative requirements.
  • Work within Workday to process, code, and post transactions accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Receive and process university monies, including checks and electronic fund transactions.  Perform all tasks related to recording and auditing transactions.
  • Run queries and reports from the university Workday system.  Note inconsistencies and resolve discrepancies whenever possible.
  • Perform complex accounting work to collect and analyze financial information for the department.
  • Ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles as well as all laws and regulations.
  • Collect and record financial data; verify and report data in a way that facilitates sound financial decision-making.
  • Audit, reconcile, and prepare various reports and balance various accounts to ensure accurate records and reports within required iterations (daily, monthly, quarterly, semesterly) and established guidelines and deadlines.
  • Manage records for past and present projects, programs, and operations.
  • Perform any other related duties and tasks as required or assigned and organize information in a way that facilitates the goals of the department.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of accounting principles and the ability to work on various accounting and business software programs to create reports and documentation. 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, & PowerPoint).
  • Excellent customer services skills. 
  • Strong written communications skills with an emphasis on grammar and sentence structure. 
  • Strong oral communication skills. 
  • Well organized with attention to detail. 
  • Ability to work independently and accurately. 
  • Ability to adapt to change and effectively communicate.
  • Ability to respond to program and University priorities as well as conflicts and questions that arise.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field and at least three years of accounting or related experience.

Sit at a desk and use hand, wrist and finger movements to operate a computer regularly.  Talk and listen to other individuals in meetings and over the phone.  Stand and walk around the office and to other campus facilities in order to perform day-to-day duties.  Lift and carry general office supplies and equipment.
