Job Summary


The Accountant I performs professional accounting functions for accounts payable, foundation accounts, and general accounting. Computes and prepares data for revenue journal entries and reports. Assists the WGCU Public Media Finance department at FGCU with general accounting duties.
WGCU is Southwest Florida’s source for PBS and NPR. A member-supported service of Florida Gulf Coast University, WGCU provides educational programming that inspires, informs and engages our community. Serving all or part of 12 counties in south and Southwest Florida, with five distinct digital TV channels, two FM radio channels, two HD radio channels, and multiple websites, WGCU delivers national and international programming, and develops, produces and delivers relevant, informative and educational local programs to the region.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Accurately records all financial transactions for WGCU as they relate to auxiliary, foundation, contracts and grants, and education and general funds. Maintains appropriate documentation.
  • Reconciles assigned accounts. Makes corrections and adjustments to the general ledger.
  • Completes monthly underwriting billing process.
  • Prepares financial reports, worksheets, and accounting summaries.  Performs detailed analyses of accounting activities.  Identifies discrepancies and makes recommendations for correction.
  • Assists with reconciling monthly revenues and preparing journal entries for import.
  • Prepares audit schedules and documents required for annual external audit. Prepares required annual Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) reports.
  • Creates and maintains spreadsheets or databases for supporting documentation, record keeping, auditing, and verification.
  • Assists with accounting and budget questions, revenue and expenditure coding, document processing and other activities. Researches and analyzes the history of accounting transactions, performs queries, and generates supporting documentation. 
  • Ensures accounting transactions are compliant with FGCU policies, federal and state regulations, and GAAP standards.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • This position requires either five years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Accounting or closely related field and one year of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • Professional full-time accounting experience.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Accounting experience in a public media setting
  • Experience with Protrack, WideOrbit, Workday, and Allegiance.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) as they related to higher education accounting activities.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn Workday, Protrack, WideOrbit, and Allegiance or similar enterprise financial management software applications.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects.
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with a diverse group of staff, faculty, students, and the community in a service-oriented environment.
  • Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to take initiative to plan, organize, coordinate and perform work in various situations when numerous and diverse demands are involved.
