Job Description


The Office of Research and Innovation (ORI) is seeking a full-time Accountant/Financial Analyst to provide financial and accounting support of a complex nature for the central administrative functions of the office. Reporting to the Sr. Director of Finance, the Accountant/Financial Analyst is responsible for fiscal and accounting duties to include: preparing journal entries, budget transfers, indirect cost and fund code management, assisting with budget related matters, reconciling and reporting of Banner funds, labor redistributions, and cost recovery invoicing and related accounts receivable management. Responsibilities also include working closely with units reporting under ORI and University Scholarships and Financial Aid (USFA) staff on developing annual spend plans and complying with utilization, quarterly reporting and other requirements. At the direction of the Sr. Director of Finance, the Accountant/Financial Analyst will also analyze program expenditures and metrics, and provide ad hoc reporting for various initiatives and special projects within ORI. The position will also serve as a backup to the Sr. Finance and Travel Specialist for travel reimbursements and procurements.

This position is located on Virginia Tech’s Blacksburg, VA campus. The position is eligible for a hybrid work agreement and commutable distance to Blacksburg to provide a weekly on-campus presence, as agreed upon with the hiring manager.


Required Qualifications

• B.S. or certificate in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field, or equivalent experience.
• Knowledge of GAAP accounting and practices and internal controls related to payment monitoring, acceptance, and compliance.
• Excellent computer skills including use of spreadsheets and word processing software (e.g., MS Excel and Word).
• Demonstrated ability to meet established deadlines.
• Demonstrated experience performing financial analysis, reconciliations, and dispute resolution.
• Demonstrated experience creating financial reports by gathering, analyzing, summarizing, and interpreting data.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to provide customer service in a courteous manner and work effectively with others in a team environment.
• Ability to work independently, handle diverse tasks, and work cooperatively in a diverse and high-volume environment


Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of working rules and procedures in the public sector (e.g. government agency or higher education) for reconciliations, purchasing, general accounting, payroll, personnel, and travel.
• Experience working with large financial enterprise-wide systems involving procurement, travel, and reporting.
• Experience with using Excel pivot tables to aggregate and analyze data.


Salary Information

Starting at $60,000; commensurate with experience
