Join our team at the Hilton M. Briggs Library as we seek a dedicated professional to lead our Access Services operations. Are you passionate about providing exceptional library services and creating positive patron experiences? This is a unique opportunity to supervise the daily functions of circulation, interlibrary loan, and customer service in a dynamic academic environment. The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational skills, a passion for customer service excellence, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented setting. This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota and is a 12-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position.  
 
The Hilton M. Briggs Library inspires academic excellence, collaborative endeavor, creative scholarship, student engagement and lifelong curiosity. We serve all South Dakota State University (SDSU) academic disciplines and hold approximately 700,000 bound volumes, and 600,000 government documents, in addition to over 100,000 electronic journals. The library building offers a variety of collaborative and individual workspaces, including couches, tables, classrooms, study rooms and quiet areas.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Access Services Coordinator is a 12-month position that will supervise the daily operations for Access Services at the Hilton M. Briggs Library, including circulation, interlibrary loan, and customer service. They will report to, and coordinate with, the Head of Public Services to create department policies, procedures, trainings, and customer service goals. They will oversee the daily functions of the circulation desk and interlibrary loan to ensure consistent and positive patron interactions.
 
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Supervise one or more staff including a library associate who supervises approximately 10 part-time student employees.
  • Oversee and participate in interlibrary loan and document delivery services.
  • Prepare a desk schedule for professional departmental staff and ensure that all library hours are appropriately staffed.
  • Assume responsibility for opening the library each weekday morning.
  • Participate in rotation of providing coverage at the library circulation desk.
  • Oversee workflows to ensure quality customer service while seeking continuous improvement.
  • Work cooperatively to address facilities and safety/security-related issues.
  • Develop and communicate goals and objectives for the unit.
  • Participate in library meetings taking a broad library-wide perspective while representing the needs of the access services unit.
  • Serve on library committees.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant library and university policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate/create the librarians’ reference desk schedule.
  • Share in staffing the reference desk and chat service.
  • Coordinate library meeting rooms schedule.
  • Operate cash register.
  • Some evening/weekend hours required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree completed by date of application;
  • Minimum of two years library experience;
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and verbal/written communication skills; and
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with private and sensitive patron data.

 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • An ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science;
  • Supervisory experience;
  • Experience in circulation, access services, and/or interlibrary loan;
  • Experience working with student staff or traditional college-age individuals;
  • Experience with Springshare products, including LibStaffer and LibCal;
  • Experience with ALMA or another integrated library system; and
  • Experience with Tipasa or another interlibrary loan software.
