Access Consultant – Disability Services

The George Mason University, Office of Disability Services within the University Life Department, invites applications for an Access Consultant, at the Fairfax, Va., campus. About the Position:

The Access Consultant will report directly to the Associate Director of Disability Services. The Access Consultant works with students to determine reasonable and appropriate accommodations and services to which the students are entitled to under the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Applying independent judgment and expertise, the Access Consultant interacts with faculty, parents and students; serves on university committees representing disability issues and concerns; and engages in activities that promote campus accessibility, awareness and inclusive design.
Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with the Disability Services specialists to review and interpret confidential medical and psychological evaluations in order to determine eligibility for services and appropriate accommodations;
  • Develop, monitor, adjust and evaluate individual academic/non-academic accommodations for students;
  • Provide ongoing student case management, follow-up, and support of accommodations both in and out of the classroom, as well as related faculty support and advocacy;
  • Maintain confidential student files, records and correspondence;
  • Faculty advisor to Delta Alpha Pi Honor Society;
  • Develop and conduct presentations for internal and external stakeholders, incoming students and families; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in rehabilitation counseling, special education, educational psychology, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience; and
  • Experience (one to two years is preferred) working with students who have disabilities and reading/interpreting psychoeducational, neuropsychological and other assessment-based reports.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in special education, counseling, a social service field, or another related field;
  • Experience working with individuals with psychological, physical (visible and invisible), sensory impairments, medical conditions, learning disorders, attention deficit disorder/attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and/or other conditions;
  • Experience documenting written decisions and case progress;
  • Related administrative/programmatic experience;
  • Ability to monitor extensive details while focusing on overall program mission;
  • Working knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the ADAA of 2008, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and other appropriate laws; and
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends on occasion.
