The Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia is seeking an Assistant Director of Student Services. A highly active and engaged community with programming centered around policy, leadership, and public service, the Assistant Director of Student Services is responsible for providing exceptional service in support of day-to-day student services operations, both through creative programming and thoughtful advising. The Assistant Director reports to the Senior Assistant Dean for Student and Career Services, serving a key role on Batten’s larger student and career services administrative team, which also includes our Director of Career Services and Alumni Engagement and Assistant Director of Career Services.

More specifically, the Assistant Director serves as the primary student advisor for our graduate and undergraduate student organizations, including two student councils and numerous organizations designed to engage diverse students in dialoguing and addressing our nation’s most pressing policy issues. Reflecting the University of Virginia’s strong sense of student self-governance, the Assistant Director will assist students in the planning and execution of school-wide events such as the Batten Builds day of service, Virginia Policy Review annual conference, and myriad student speakers’ series. The Assistant Director will convene the monthly student leaders’ “Community Roundtable” meetings, seeking student feedback and guiding the monthly agenda as appropriate.

In coordination with the Senior Assistant Dean for Student and Career Services, the Assistant Director will play a leadership role in community-building events for students, including off-site undergraduate and graduate retreats, weekly “Batten Hour” speakers, and the annual Class Dinners and graduation events. Collaborating with the larger Student and Career Services team, the Assistant Director will work with student BattenCorps and Batten Alumni Advisory Board leaders to provide additional support and programming for graduate and undergraduate students on a monthly basis.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in higher education, public policy, counseling, or related field
  • At least 3 years of progressively responsible experience in a university student services or policy-related field
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and community-building
  • Demonstrated commitment to public service
  • Strong sense of customer service orientation; creativity, ability to assume responsibility, take initiative and motivate others
  • Ability to develop, monitor, and manage budgets
  • Demonstrated experience with program/workshop development and event coordination
  • Well-developed organizational skills; ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Exceptional verbal and written communications skills
  • Excellent presentation and analytical skills
  • Proven ability to work effectively with diverse constituents, including graduate and undergraduate students, staff, faculty, and alumni
  • Proficient computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Anticipated hiring range: $60,000- $67,000
