Job Description Summary:
The Writing Specialist is an integral part of the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC), focused on designing, developing, and delivering writing support to university health science students in Kansas City, Wichita and Salina and online students as well as medical residents/fellows in Kansas City. In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Educational Support Services, the Writing Specialist is responsible for designing, planning, organizing and directing all aspects of writing services and programming on the KUMC campus. The Writing Specialist consults with undergraduate students, graduate students and medical residents/fellows to develop writing skills, provide writing resources, and advance scholarship via the Writing Center. The Writing Specialist meets regularly with writers on an individual basis both onsite and online and collaborates with faculty on meeting the writing needs of students and residents/fellows. The Writing Specialist supports the department’s and Academic and Student Affairs’ strategic programming initiatives to help culturally diverse students succeed. In discharging these duties, the Writing Specialist is expected to be keenly sensitive to issues of gender, culture, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disabilities, socio-economic status, etc., to be committed to the work of social justice, and to be skilled with techniques for supporting students with diverse backgrounds.
Job Description:

    Job Duties

    • Plan, organize, and deliver writing support for students and residents/fellows on an ongoing basis in individual sessions.  Provide students with strategies to improve writing skills.  Individual student writing sessions are available to all KUMC students in any program, on any campus and online as well as medical residents/fellows in Kansas City. 
    • Collaborate with faculty to develop appropriate writing supports per different curriculums.
    • Design, develop, implement and market writing outreach programming and materials for presentations, workshops, and other events on a variety of topics to enhance student writing.
    • Design, develop, implement and market writing groups for students.
    • Provide supervision, support and training for hourly writing tutors.
    • Consult with faculty in all schools to embed technical and scientific writing skills into writing-intensive courses. 
    • In coordination with Teaching and Learning Technologies Media department design, develop and promote brief instructional videos. 
    • Develop and implement a strategic plan for writing services that is consistent with the Division of Academic and Student Affairs and University’s strategic plan.
    • Establish and maintain effective communication with students as well as all levels of the university. 
    • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Educational Support Services.

    Required Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in Literature; Composition, Rhetoric and Literature; Technical Writing; or related field.
    • Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by completion of a thesis and/or a scholarly publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
    • Experience teaching and/or tutoring in asynchronous/synchronous online modes.
    • Experience working with diverse students, faculty, and staff in an educational environment.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Ph.D. or equivalent in a writing-related field with at least one year’s experience teaching and tutoring writing.  Doctoral candidates with one year or less until graduation will be considered. 
    • Experience teaching writing to graduate students and/or tutoring graduate students in technical and/or scientific writing.
    • Experience preparing and leading writing workshops and creating/supervising writing groups.
    • Experience in personnel supervision, including the training and evaluation of writing tutor employees.
    • Experience developing and implementing assessment tools. Experience in grant writing and editing.
