Essential Functions : Under the supervision of the Department Chair of Liberal Studies and Liberal Studies Professors, the Writing Tutors/ Academic Support Liaisons will work with professors teaching at the California Institution for Women (CIW) to develop academic success programs in writing, reading, or supplemental instruction related to CIW professors' assignments, readings, and in-class activities to improve their knowledge of content, academic skills, and learning skills ( e.g., how to work in groups or contribute to in-person class discussions). Writing tutors will help students to become self directed learning. Foster growth mindset. Help students develop effective reading and notetaking strategies diagnose and remedy writing problems, provide reader-based feedback, help students learn strategies for brainstorming and proofreading (pre writing), grammar and syntax, awareness of genre and audience, appropriate use of voice, organization, revision strategies and development evidence-based arguments. Support faculty in helping students to understand basic approaches to "reading in the disciplines," including reading scholarly and primary sources. Support faculty in helping students with information literacy, including how to conduct appropriate research into scholarly and primary sources. Provide support with basic computer skills such as how to use Canvas and Microsoft Word. Support faculty in helping students to engage in peer (student-to-student) mentoring sessions. Meet with faculty to coordinate tutoring support for writing, reading, research, and supplemental instruction. Tutors may have the opportunity to be involved in small-group sessions, study skills and/or writing workshops, webinars, classroom presentations, and in-class tutoring, with students and/or teaching faculty. The lead coordinator (with the LBS Chair and LBS professors) will provide training, materials, and direction for tutors. Tutors will complete mandatory training, observations, attend staff meetings, keep scheduled appointments, and conduct professional development projects every semester. Tutors conduct tutoring sessions at CIW or participate in staff meetings. Tutors should understand the role diversity plays in the tutoring process and foster inclusive environment. Issues of race, ethnicity, class, and gender are central to much of the curriculum; tutors will demonstrate culturally competent and effective in facilitating conversations around these topics.
