Academic Thoracic Surgeon-Scientist (Senior Faculty)

The Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery (Department) at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) seeks an exceptional surgeon-scientist at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor to serve as Director of the Lung Institute in the David J. Sugarbaker Division of Thoracic Surgery (Division). A successful candidate in this position will play a key role as a research leader in the Division and the Department and as a clinical leader focused on the thoracic surgery practice at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, our BCM cornerstone adult hospital affiliate.

The ideal candidate will provide strategic and operational direction that will lead to growth of the clinical, research and educational missions of the Division and our Department across the Texas Medical Center - the largest medical center in the world.  Staffed by five full-time faculty working at Baylor-affiliated institutions including the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, the Ben Taub Hospital, Texas Children's Hospital, and the Dan L. Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Division is recognized for our Lung Institute and engages in a diverse portfolio of surgical procedures ranging from robotic esophagectomy to extrapleural pneumonectomy as part of its Mesothelioma Treatment Center.

The Division helps oversee a traditional thoracic surgery fellowship, an integrated thoracic surgery residency and specialty fellowships.  In addition to a robust portfolio of clinical and translational research, the Division's NIH-funded Thoracic Surgery Research Laboratory investigates mechanisms of response to immunotherapy and mechanisms of carcinogenesis in thoracic cancers. A successful candidate will exhibit a commitment to clinical excellence, research, innovation, teaching, and collaborative practices.

The candidate preferably has shown a history of leadership and administration experience relating to clinical practice, educational programs, and successful research activities. In addition, the candidate must be certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and qualify for medical licensure in the state of Texas, have completed an advanced fellowship in thoracic surgery, robotics experience in thoracic procedures. Rank and tenure status are commensurate upon qualifications.
