General Chemistry Laboratory Tech

Description:

Technical support for the General Chemistry Laboratory Program and various outreach programs. General duties are as follows: performs lab and equipment maintenance; prepares chemicals and other materials for student experiments; while working alongside the lab assistants, supervises 6 to 10 part-time lab assistants; supervises equipment inventories and lab record keeping for 1,500 to 2,000 undergraduate students; and properly handles and disposes of hazardous materials. This position must be knowledgeable of chemical safety protocol at the University of Tennessee, in addition to state and federal regulations; must be able to apply those protocols in waste management and disposal; must maintain a detailed chemical inventory of all chemicals in the general chemistry stockroom; and must be knowledgeable of chemical compatibilities to ensure lab and chemical storage safety.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Prepares laboratories for use in the General Chemistry curriculum
Orders and purchases chemicals and equipment
Prepares chemicals and other materials for both the teaching laboratory and the chemical preparation room.
Sets-up and disassembles experimental supplies and apparatus
Maintains laboratory equipment.
Properly handles hazardous wastes.
Maintains a chemical inventory for the general chemistry labs.
Keeps the laboratory spaces neat and clean.
Acts as safety contact for approximately 50 teaching assistants, 5-10 faculty, and nearly 2000 undergraduate students every week of the fall and spring semesters.
Acts as direct support for the Chem 100, 110, 120, 130, 128, and 138 courses for fall, spring and summer sessions.
While working alongside with the lab assistants, this position supervises 6-10 part-time laboratory assistants each semester in the general chemistry stockroom.
Schedules lab assistant work hours and supervises their work.
Trains laboratory students, including mandatory state, university, and departmental training.
Performs evaluations for the lab assistants.
Works with graduate teaching assistants to ensure that laboratory safety standards are maintained.
Assists in preparation and execution of laboratory experiments.
Works in tandem with the laboratory director, faculty, and graduate students to enforce established .laboratory safety protocols.
Supports Outreach activities
Acts as support for faculty and students on outreach activities in addition to supporting other departmental outreach efforts such as, but not limited to, Olympiad, the Summer Chemistry Camp, Summer Bridge Program, and the Governor’s School for the Sciences.
Record Keeping
Maintains equipment and supply records for the General Chemistry laboratories used by 1500-2000 students per semester
Issues equipment for use during regular lab sessions
Assisted by graduate teaching assistants
Maintains records of this equipment
Breakage and replacement
Maintains records of the chemical and equipment inventory in the general chemistry laboratories
 



Qualifications

 Minimum Requirements: 
Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, strong interpersonal skills, organizational skills
Preferred Level of Experience: 
Master’s degree in Chemistry, and 2 years of experience in management within a laboratory setting
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of chemical compatibilities
Knowledge of concepts and topics from general and organic chemistry
Ability to manage, coordinate, and deploy stockroom assistants
Ability to enforce safety protocols and expectations
Knowledge of chemical preparation and synthesis
Knowledge of equipment and techniques used in a chemistry laboratory
Ability to react quickly and properly to immediate emergencies and issues arising in a laboratory

Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Knowledge of chemical properties and chemical safety
Work schedule requires the ability to work frequent evenings
