Description of Work Unit
The Department of Animal Sciences has the unique mission of serving Colorado’s large and diverse livestock industries. Research, teaching and extension outreach activities in the Department of Animal Sciences focus on developing industry leaders and improving profitable production of horses and food animals through the application of science and technology, resource management and food product enhancement, with emphasis on addressing societal issues concerning food safety, product quality and value, animal care and management, and environmental impacts of animal agriculture.
Position Summary
The Department of Animal Sciences is seeking an Academic Success Coordinator (ASC) to strengthen ongoing departmental efforts to provide quality advising, enhance undergraduate student success, and support the campus priority for a diverse and supportive learning environment. This is a 12-month, full time, regular, administrative professional position located in the Student Success Center within the Department of Animal Sciences.
The primary functions of this position are to:
1) assist new students with a successful transition to the University;
2) promote exploration of academic goals/opportunities to ensure selection of an appropriate major;
3) work individually with Animal Sciences and Equine Sciences majors to develop, implement, and monitor a plan of study leading to timely graduation and eventual attainment of career goals;
4) foster student engagement with faculty mentors and departmental programs and activities, and
5) participate in department and college initiatives related to student engagement and advising.
As a member of the Student Success Team, the ASC will be supervised by the director of undergraduate programs, other advising staff (within the department and college), and the campus-wide ASC network. This position reports to the Department Head or their designee.

  • Evidence of ability to exercise sound judgment and decision making in working with vulnerable populations.

  • Occasional evening and weekend work will be requested; limited travel to an annual conference will be required.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in animal sciences, equine sciences, natural science, animal behavior, agriculture, student affairs, education, counseling or closely related field
  • Advanced degree(s) in animal sciences, equine sciences or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience advising and or mentoring. Understanding of student development, academic policies and degree requirements in higher education.
  • Ability to create a welcoming environment, build rapport, and work well with diverse populations.
  • Interest and ability to summarize, analyze, and interpret data relevant to assigned responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of higher education and/or other academic advising systems
  • Excel spreadsheet data management skills.

Student Support for Transitions, Major Selection, and Progress to Graduation. Advise undergraduate Animal Science and Equine Science majors regarding curriculum, course selection, academic requirements, and progress toward degree completion. Maintain accurate and detailed advising records. Review transfer evaluations and recommend re-evaluations when necessary.
Conduct advising workshops or group advising sessions to facilitate plans of study in addition to the development of long- and short-term plans.
Guide students in not only the selection of their major, but also determining the appropriate coursework to achieve their academic and career goals. Connect advisees with faculty members in an effort to offer detailed, discipline-specific knowledge and perspective. Develop, maintain, and update advising materials and undergraduate information both in print and on the departmental website. Inform students about internship, research, student teaching, and co-curricular opportunities. Promote university, college, and departmental scholarship opportunities to students. Promote career counseling and engagement with various campus resources and opportunities. Develop a working knowledge of all university (AUCC) curricular requirements and institutional policies. Facilitate communication between students and their instructors or other campus offices at the departmental, college, or university level, serving as an advocate for students, when appropriate. Collaborate with departmental staff not only to maintain a welcoming environment, but also to deliver consistent and accurate information. Be able to discern patterns of student success and difficulty. Develop an understanding of issues faced by students and practice advising approach accordingly. Develop awareness of special circumstances encountered by students with multiple majors or other strong cross-disciplinary emphases in their programs of study.

Engage assigned first-year students during the first 6 weeks of the semester to support a successful transition to the university. Maintain continuous advising relationships for the following two years. Promote exploration of options for students questioning their choice of major. Promote involvement in Department student engagement opportunities (i.e. undergraduate clubs or other undergraduate activities). Facilitate faculty-student dialogue by making referrals for discipline-specific advising and mentoring by faculty.
Design and implement strategic interventions to facilitate student success. Participate in proactive student outreach initiatives/activities developed by the university and Student Success Team. Facilitate faculty-student engagement via faculty mentoring and targeted advising.
Collect and maintain student performance data to document patterns associated with retention and graduation rates. Work with students to develop strategies to overcome academic difficulties by identifying and addressing factors contributing to poor academic performance.
