Job Description

This position is part of the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence (SCAI) graduate academic advising team, within the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering (FSE). SCAI is the largest of the Fulton Schools of Engineering with over 9,800 domestic and international students between our Tempe, Polytechnic and Online campuses. SCAI Advising staff value a student-centered approach at the heart of everything that we do. Our advising team is a diverse group of dynamic and seasoned individuals highly adept at pivoting to our ever-changing school and student needs. Under general supervision, the Graduate Academic Success Advisor, Senior is a key contributor to increasing student retention, graduation and timely progression toward a degree through a range of in-person, group, and online academic support strategies. Advisors work as a team to support student recruiting and academic advising to prospective and current students. Advisors are also key contributors to supporting student engagement through The Fulton Difference. This position works with master’s and PhD students within SCAI. This position is based on campus in Tempe, Arizona. Hybrid work may be considered after hire and after training. Dean or vice president-level approval is required.

Essential Duties

Interacts with diverse groups of faculty, staff, students and general public; Interprets and guide students, faculty and staff with adhering to and complying with university, college, school, and program level academic guidelines, policies and procedures in relation to recruiting, retention, degree progression, and graduation; Plans, develops and
delivers one to one and/or group academic advising through multiple formats (in-person,
phone, Zoom, etc.);  Participates in student engagement activities: assist as needed with program information
sessions in person and via Zoom to prospective, new, and continuing students. Topics for sessions include: 4+1, new student orientation, welcome meetings, iPOS workshops, CPT/Internship processing workshops, graduation workshops; Uses strong communication skills to develop and foster University, school, and
community relationships/partnerships in support of making effective student referrals to
university resources; Utilizes PeopleSoft, ASU Analytics, MyReports, WebXtender, Salesforce, DARs, and
internet based programs to college, interpret, and present data, generate reports to assist
school leadership in making decisions for program development and implementation, and
to monitor student recruiting, retention, and general student academic progress; Works under deadlines, manage multiple responsibilities and duties, with interruptions and in unclear and/or changing situations; Mentor other and/or new advising staff on best practices; Take ownership of major projects as assigned by leadership; Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related field and three (3) years or more of advising or related student services experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master’s degree (in a related area appropriate to this position) and two years of experience in a related field
  • Academic advising, graduate advising and experience with working with international student populations is preferred
  • Experience in implementing and adhering to university and program policies and procedures; 
  • Knowledge of student recruitment and retention;
  • Evidence of being a strategic and collaborative thinker, and self-starter;
  • Experience in problem solving, applying critical thinking, and time management skills. 
  • Experience in working independently as well as be a team player.
  • Experience in organizing, collecting, analyzing and reporting a variety of data in written, verbal and electronic formats.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills with a strong focus on collaboration and a high level of customer service while using multiple systems such as PeopleSoft, Excel, Canvas, Microsoft systems, Zoom, etc.

  • Uses a computer, keyboard, manipulates computer mouse, telephone, printer, fax, and copier.
  • Maintains databases and develops reports.
  • Schedule appointments and maintain calendar.
  • Regular activities require ability to communicate in a timely manner and respond quickly to changing priorities which may include and/or subject to resolution of conflicts, problem solving, and teamwork.
