Job Description

The School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks seeks an individual for the role of full-time Academic Success Advisor, Sr. to be a key contributor to promoting and supporting student success, retention and graduation, in addition to contributing to Fulton Schools of Engineering (FSE) and Arizona State University’s educational and engagement efforts. Advising teams support students from their first semester until graduation by working directly with students in person, by phone, Zoom, and/or e-mail, and through Salesforce case management strategies. Advisors are also key contributors to supporting student engagement through The Fulton Difference.

This position is part of the new School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks (MSN), one of the seven schools in the Fulton Schools of Engineering (FSE). The School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks is integrating academic programs and innovative research to address current and future manufacturing challenges and improve sustainability and generate economic opportunities to revitalize manufacturing in Arizona and beyond. The academic programs and research portfolio of the School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks are designed to address the next-generation engineering challenges that are transforming manufacturing systems. Students will gain the transformative skills needed to impact the future of work, including industry 4.0, autonomous systems and processes, and systems engineering. Essential Duties

  • With limited supervision, provide individual and group academic advising to undergraduate and graduate students that supports academic success, engagement as an FSE student, and timely progress to graduation;
  • Support students to resolve challenges by having current knowledge and making appropriate referrals to ASU services including, but not limited to, Student Health, ASU Counseling Services and the Fulton Career Center;
  • With limited supervision, provide administrative support related to student enrollment, registration, orientation, retention and degree completion while maintaining comprehensive and accurate student records using a variety of software and data sources;
  • Organize and participate in ASU and FSE initiatives and efforts aimed at recruiting, engaging and retaining FSE students;
  • Consult with program chairs, faculty, colleagues and students to support FSE students to proceed efficiently through their curriculum and navigate setbacks;
  • Interacts  with  diverse  groups  of  faculty,  staff,  students  and  general  public; Interprets and guides students, faculty and staff with adhering to and complying with university, college, school, and program-level academic guidelines, policies and procedures in relation to recruitment, retention, degree progression, and graduation; Plans, develops, and delivers one to one and/or group academic advising through multiple formats (in-person, phone, Slack, Skype, Zoom online, etc.);
  • Plans, coordinates and delivers program information sessions in person and via Zoom to recruit prospective students and support growth in program enrollment; leads recruitment and enrollment efforts for accelerated degree options; 
  • Uses strong communication skills to develop and foster University, school, and community relationship/partnerships in support of making effective student referrals to university resources;
  • Utilizes PeopleSoft, ASU Analytics, DARS, AppXtender, GPortal, Salesforce, and internet-based programs to collect, interpret, use and present data, to monitor student recruitment, retention, and general student academic progress;
  • Works under deadlines, manage multiple responsibilities and duties, with interruptions, and in unclear and/or changing situations;
  • Takes ownership of major projects as assigned by leadership;
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related field and three (3) years or more of advising or related student services experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in college level academic advising, including both undergraduate and graduate students. Experience with implementing and adhering to university and program policies and procedures; student recruitment and retention.
  • Experience in working with diverse student populations.
  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills with a strong focus on collaboration and a high level of customer service.
  • Evidence of a master’s degree in higher education or related area.
  • Evidence of strong technology skills in systems such as Peoplesoft, Excel, Canvas, Google Suite, Slack, Salesforce, Outlook, etc.; Experience in using student information computer systems and degree audits (i.e. PeopleSoft, DARS).
  • Strategic thinker and self starter; ability to problem solve, apply critical thinking, and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ASU and  Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering policies and curricular requirements.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current trends and best practices in academic advising.
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office applications (i.e., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
  • Experience in developing and maintaining effective professional working relationships.
  • Experience with Peoplesoft, Salesforce, Analytics. Experience in using database programs, including organizing, collecting, analyzing and reporting a variety of data in written, verbal and electronic formats.
  • Experience in leading or assisting with special events.

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
