Academic Success Advisor
Job Description
The T. Denny Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics is seeking a full-time Academic Success Advisor to provide academic advising to undergraduate students in the Family and Human Development and Sociology programs. The Academic Success Advisor acts as a key contributor to promoting and supporting student retention and graduation university-wide and advises students in making timely progress toward degree completion through a range of in-person and virtual academic advising and support strategies. This position will work with campus-based and ASU Online students.

Essential Duties
- Provides individual as well as group academic advising, recruitment and retention, and academic success support functions to a diverse population.
- Works closely and collaboratively (via in person, phone or Zoom meetings) with students, faculty, and staff to support academic success.
- Monitors student academic progress and program effectiveness using a variety of technology-based tools (such as PeopleSoft, DARS, Salesforce, eAdvisor, Bookings, and other tools and technology), and the application of retention focused strategies, and relevant advising/student development/engagement theories.
- Maintains an openness to new and developing tools utilized across the University to aid in student success and excellent service.
- Able to learn and use multiple systems at same time (such as student record databases, customer relationship management systems, degree progress tools, appointment systems, analytics software/tools).
- Shares feedback and insight regarding technology systems and their daily use.
- Utilizes collegial interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively in person, writing, by phone or Zoom; establishes and maintains effective professional working relationships.
- Proactively monitors student academic performance; addresses, responds to, and works to resolve student concerns, questions, or issues; collaborates closely with students to identify all academic options including, but not limited to: degrees, tutoring, counseling, career services, success coaches, extracurricular activities, study abroad program(s), research, and internships; supports and provides counsel to students in selection of options best suited to the student's goals, interests, and skills.
- Acts as a college/department/school representative to current and prospective students, faculty, staff, and external groups on issues related to academic success; attends and/or presents at orientation or recruiting events/activities/workshops.
- Works to ensure ongoing satisfaction for students with their program and degree progress, provides follow up to ensure satisfaction with and effectiveness of services, and utilizes a variety of university data and programmatic direction to promote student academic success.
- Regularly monitors assessment resources to refine and build effective practices. Works collaboratively and collegially with academic unit and services throughout the university to facilitate comprehensive student support.
- Possesses a clear understanding of the larger picture of the college and/or departmental processes and expectations around the utilization of these tools and how they impact student experience.
- Escalates/redirects urgent or conflicting requests. Recognizes complex issues and alerts leadership; may provide suggestions in response.
- Assists with the coordination of academic success program or advising policy development and implementation.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree AND one (1) year or more previous experience in one or more of the following: advising, student recruitment/retention or related student services utilizing a proactive and innovative approach which results in demonstrated outcomes in retention, graduation, and academic planning; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications
- Evidence of a Master’s Degree in a related field AND one (1) year or more previous experience in one or more of the following: academic advising; student recruitment/retention, related student services and/or teaching in an institution of higher education.
- Experience working in undergraduate college level academic advising and working with higher education faculty and staff.
- Experience working with online and campus students.
- Demonstrated knowledge of principles, practices, procedures and methods of evidence-based academic advising.
- Demonstrated knowledge of ASU academic structure and organization.
- Demonstrated knowledge of ASU academic programs, colleges, and departments university-wide.
- Demonstrated knowledge of student information systems (DARs, PeopleSoft, Salesforce) and online advising technology tools (Zoom, Slack, Skype).
- Experience in demonstrating sensitivity to needs of a diverse student population.
- Experience in rapidly adapting to and effectively utilizing new technology, practices, policies, and methods.
- Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills.
Working Environment
- Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting.
- Use of office equipment to include a desktop/laptop computer.
- Lift items up to 20 pounds and attend meetings at various locations across campus.
- Ability to work both independently and/or within a complex structured team.
- Normally receives no instructions on routine work and general instructions on new assignments with review of completed tasks.
- Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
