Job Description

The ASU Interplanetary Initiative seeks an Academic Success Advising Coordinator Senior for our on-ground and online degree programs and student engagement efforts. 

The Academic Success Advising Coordinator, Senior is primarily responsible for coordinating academic advising, internship advising and course instruction, and course scheduling for our degree programs. In addition, this position will coordinate and facilitate student engagement programs to serve both our students and the broader community of ASU students interested in space and the work of the Interplanetary Initiative. This position reports to the Interplanetary Initiative’s Director of Learning.

Essential Duties

  • Provide personalized, intentional, and holistic advising support to online and on-ground Technological Leadership students to ensure ongoing success.
  • Provide guidance and advice to students related to degree progression and completion, including but not limited to: choosing electives, internship placement, exploring minors and certificates, extracurricular activities, and research opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively with academic units and university offices services to provide individualized and timely student support and follow-up. 
  • Analyze and leverage a variety of university data to identify trends, promote academic success and ensure ongoing satisfaction for students with their program and successful progress to completion.
  • Act as a leader to coordinate academic success programs or advising policy development and implementation.
  • Coordinate internship approval processes and procedures. Provide guidance and advice to students related to internship preparation, application, and placement. Connect students with appropriate resources including, but not limited to internship opportunities, job fairs, and relevant career skills workshops. 
  • Serve as an instructor for our internship preparation courses. Design and improve course content and structure, based on evidence from student outcomes and feedback.
  • Serve as the Unit Scheduler for Interplanetary Initiative courses and classrooms. 
  • Coordinate various student engagement programs and projects directed to the retention and success of the student population (e.g. student events, onboarding experiences, recruitment efforts), as well as the development and maintenance of a broader community of ASU students interested in space and the work of the Initiative.
  • Drive student engagement and degree initiatives with holistic understanding of the Interplanetary Initiative’s mission and goals. 
  • Work collaboratively and collegially with the Interplanetary Initiative’s leadership, marketing, laboratory, and research teams on short and long-term goals related to the success of our student engagement and academic programs.
  • Utilize and demonstrate fluency with a wide range of relevant and appropriate software, student development theory, and retention focused strategies. 
  • As required, act as a college/department/school representative to current and prospective students, faculty, staff, and external groups.
  • As required, attend and/or present at orientation events, recruitment trainings, Interplanetary Initiative public meetings, and other relevant workshops. 
  • As required, supervise/support Academic Success Advisors and/or student employees in the successful execution of their duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in related field and three (3) years or more of advising or related student services experience, one of which should be in the field of academic advising; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles, practices, procedures and methods of evidence-based academic and internship or career advising strategies.
  • Experience demonstrating sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population.
  • Experience applying the principles, techniques and methods of teamwork, compromise and collaboration to produce desired outcomes.
  • Experience interpreting student needs and determining when referral to other University resources is appropriate.
  • Experience in using Google Suite, and Microsoft Office computer applications.
  • Experience using student information systems such as PeopleSoft, Salesforce, and DARS.
  • Experience providing analysis of data for identification of trends.
  • Experience with course and classroom scheduling systems and processes.
  • Experience with rapidly adapting and effectively utilizing new technology, practices, policies and methods.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with peers, faculty, students, administration, faculty and other interested parties.
  • Experience working effectively in a startup-like environment and/or an environment subject to rapidly changing priorities. 
  • Experience building new student-facing processes and programs from the ground up and informed by student development theory.
  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ASU academic structure and organization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of academic programs, colleges, and departments university-wide.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require the ability to quickly change priorities, which may include resolving conflicts, coping with moderate stress levels, along with the requirements to complete tasks within set time constraints and frequently changing priorities.
  • Requires some attendance at evening and weekend events.
