Job Description

Position Description:  The Academic Program Specialist reports to the Licensure Officer and is part of the Office of Field Experiences and Licensure within the College of Education.  This individual’s primary duties are in support of the Transition to Teaching program and is the key contact for new inquiries regarding this program.  The Specialist provides guidance and direction regarding qualification requirements, licensure and other non-traditional program options to new inquiries.  The role involves professional interaction with both internal and external entities including school district and Kansas State Department of Education personnel.

Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or GED equivalency and two years of office experience or two years of post-secondary education.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multi-task and an ability to prioritize a variety of duties
  • Very detail-oriented and very organized
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of applications, including Excel and Access
  • Ability to work independently on a daily basis and as part of a team
  • Strong interpersonal and written language communication skills
  • Ability to use good judgment in making independent decisions
  • Experience in an education setting, PreK-12 or post-graduate

Appointment Date: Start date will be determined after acceptance of an offer and background check clearance

Responsibilities:

  • Central point of contact for all non-traditional teaching pathway programs requests and referrals
  • Advise potential candidates on all routes to licensure and associated programs and refer to appropriate department
  • Coordinate efforts with the non-traditional faculty coordinators (Transition to Teaching {T2T}, MSE-Elementary, MSE-Secondary, LAL-SPED) to grow the programs and meet program assurance
  • Scholarship paperwork for candidates in partnership programs and TEAM scholarships
  • Promotion and marketing of non-traditional programs including attending career fairs, information events, updating T2T brochure and website
  • Creation and updating of non-traditional pathway guidebook
  • Coordinate with Licensure Officer on candidate eligibility for licensure

Transition to Teaching Program :

  • Forward teaching position postings to qualified T2T candidates as needed.
  • Provide information regarding program options, transcript analysis for T2T and verification of qualification
  • Prepare Plan of Study and other materials for candidates hired for the T2T program
  • Monitor grades and provide notification to T2T faculty coordinator, school district, and KSDE of inadequate progress in compliance with program and state requirements    
  • Monitor enrollment via Workday system - follow up with candidates not enrolled in order to complete the non-traditional teaching pathway in a timely manner.  Maintain data relevant to projections and estimates of course enrollment for future semesters.
  • Track completion of T2T requirements: Praxis test, those needing PreK-12 experience, FERPA forms. 
  • Continual data entry for T2T program
  • Gather data for T2T KSDE Progress Report by contacting candidates and principals, checking grades and GPA each semester.  Submit Progress Report to KSDE.

Limited Apprentice License (LAL) Special Education Program :

  • Prescreen candidates for the LAL program: 1) hired as a special education teacher, 2) required GPA met, 3) employed as a para for a year
  • Submission of LAL licensure paperwork to KSDE
