University Information
Located in North Carolina’s third largest city, UNC Greensboro is among the most diverse, learner-centered public research universities in the state, with nearly 18,000 students in eight colleges and schools pursuing more than 150 areas of undergraduate and over 200 areas of graduate study. UNCG continues to be recognized nationally for academic excellence, access, and affordability. UNCG is ranked No. 1 most affordable institution in North Carolina for net cost by the N.Y. Times and No. 1 in North Carolina for social mobility by The Wall Street Journal — helping first-generation and lower-income students find paths to prosperity. Designated an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, UNCG is a community-engaged research institution with a portfolio of more than $67M in research and creative activity. The University’s 1,100 faculty and 1,700 staff help create an annual economic impact for the Piedmont Triad region in excess of $1B.
Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The College of Arts & Sciences is the largest academic unit of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The Office of the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences provides overall leadership and coordination for UNCG’s largest academic unit, comprising 27 departments, programs, and centers. The College supports faculty research, scholarship, and creative work in a wide range of disciplines, and offers doctoral, Master’s, and undergraduate degrees in addition to providing the great majority of general education courses for all UNCG undergraduates. The College of Arts & Sciences is comprised of over 450 faculty and 60 staff members. The College contributes to the university’s mission by producing more than 50% of student credit hours each semester, providing the majority of general education courses, having the highest proportion of undergraduate majors and graduate students, and encouraging research, service, and teaching excellence among its faculty. Dean’s Office staff members must provide administrative guidance to all of the unit’s departments, programs and centers. Due to the large number of faculty and staff under its purview, the College Dean’s Office deals with considerably more volume and complexity in its administrative tasks than the Dean’s staff in the professional schools. The College also maintains strong working relationships with the professional schools and is in constant communication with administrative units on campus, especially the Division of Academic Affairs.
