The Academic Director and Lecturer is expected to support, execute and promote this commitment and all NYU initiatives (including Affordability, Sustainability, and Student Success) in the day-to-day life of NYU Florence, with primary responsibility for the academic program, from course and lecturer planning to student learning.

 

This full-time position oversees the academic affairs and strategies, academic relationships and teaches in the NYU Florence study away program. Responsibilities include developing the research opportunities, and collaborating on fundraising, and government and community relations on behalf of NYU. This position reports jointly to the Vice Chancellor & Vice Provost for Global Programs and the Vice President for Global Programs, is the co-leader for NYU Florence, alongside our Associate Director (administrative director), and is a member of the Senior Leadership Team for NYU Florence.

 

Collaborate with the Assistant Vice President, Academics (NY) in overseeing NYU Florence academic and lecturer affairs, working on continuous curriculum reviews, development, and coordination, policy issues, lecturer recruitment, development, assessment, and retention. Lead, co-lead or otherwise participate on committees ensure meeting goals of academic excellence and innovation. Direct the academics team in support of academic department’s need for development and execution of short-term global immersion programs, and First Year programs in Florence. Develop and monitor other performance metrics.

 

This role requires both teaching and administrative work,; Foster collaboration between local faculty and staff to achieve university goals. Facilitate effective communication between NYU Florence lecturers and New York faculty across the curriculum.

 

A key focus of the position is to ensure the effective delivery of excellence in our academic programs that are consistent with NYU's leadership in international higher education. The program’s strengths include a first year away program, undergraduate courses across the curriculum including the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, experiential learning opportunities, short term high school and graduate programs, and a provostial research center. This position will develop and maintain relationships with our lecturers in Florence, Italian academic partners, local internship partners (and prospective partners) our governmental and community partners, Alumnae, and other university global study away programs located in Florence and throughout Italy.   This position will also help lead NYU to strengthen connections between Florence lecturers and NYU’s faculty at its degree-granting campuses in New York, Abu Dhabi and Shanghai; and, raise the profile of NYU Florence (and NYU) in the wider academic community.  Finally, this position will help continue to transform the intellectual life of NYU Florence (and NYU) as a focus of the scholarly community.



Current Required Education
A Masters Degree in an appropriate field

 

Current Required Experience

8 or more years' progressively responsible experience in senior academic administration or a related area, or an equivalent combination. Budgets and staff. Must include a minimum five years of university-level teaching experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching and scholarly work within their recognized discipline.

 

Current Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills. Proven cultural sensitivity and eloquence to communicate appropriately with a multinational, Multicultural and multireligious audience of students, academics and administrators. Ability to interact with distinguished visitors, faculty, and students. Understanding and empathy with the needs and expectations of international students. Proven ability to direct and implement a variety of operations and activities, to communicate policies and procedures to individuals at all levels and use problem solving and negotiating skills. Knowledge of standard office software including Microsoft Office suite and online and traditional packages (e.g., Google Docs). Excellent written & oral communication skills, with experience of addressing public audiences. Proficiency in English (Written and oral)

 

Current Preferred Education
A Ph.D. or other terminal degree is preferred in an appropriate field and ideally, by the date of appointment.

 

Current Preferred Experience
Experience in an academic environment with prior experience mentoring faculty, as well as experience in coordinating or overseeing administrative projects in a university setting is desirable. Experience of teaching in liberal arts, writing, or a liberal studies or general education, preferably with a global emphasis. Publications or other evidence of outstanding scholarship, creative work, or relevant professional activity. Experience in U.S. and Italian higher education

 

Current Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Fluent in Italian (written and oral). Experience and understanding of U.S. higher education.


Additional Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must be well versed in quality data collection to ensure adequacy, accuracy and legitimacy of data in NYU systems and be able to strictly follow data privacy and security procedures for data handling and analysis to ensure adherence to legal and institutional standards.
